Santiago Atitlan
Santiago Atitlán is one of the most culturally rich and historically significant towns in Guatemala. Located on the southern shores of Lake Atitlán and surrounded by volcanoes, it is a predominantly Indigenous Tz’utujil community where traditions remain deeply rooted in daily life. Unlike more touristic towns around the lake, Santiago Atitlán has very few foreigners, allowing visitors to experience local life in a truly authentic way.
During this experience, travelers will explore forest trails surrounded by lush vegetation, towering trees, and misty landscapes typical of the cloud forest. Early morning visits offer the best opportunity to observe quetzals, along with many other native and migratory bird species that thrive in this rich environment. The peaceful atmosphere and natural sounds of the forest create an ideal setting for wildlife observation and photography.

I want to start by saying that our guide was friendly and tried his best to help us see a quetzal. I have 2 complaints however. The tour was supposed to be in English, as notated when I booked the tour. However my guide spoke no English whatsoever. Secondly, we were initially told by the company that it was imperative to start at 5 AM as the window to see the quetzal is very small. Then a few hours later we were told the tour would start an hour and a half after it was supposed to so that way we could wait for additional guest to arrive by boat. With all of that being said, it was 7:30 before we set foot on the trail and we were out till after 2 pm with no such luck to spot a quetzal. Perhaps it was an unlucky day, however I can’t help but think that maybe if we had left an hour and a half earlier we would have stood a better chance. We also ended up missing our shuttle because of how late we ran. Make sure your plans are very flexible for after. I want to reiterate that our guide did try his hardest and it wasn’t his bad at all. I’m just a little frustrated to have booked a $120 tour in English, only to not be able to understand and to start beyond the best time to see the bird we came to see. Overall our guide made sure to take care of us, it was a small group and an okay experience. I only wish we could’ve started on time and had someone with a little more English ability to

I had an amazing birdwatching experience with Alvaro & Israel! We were very lucky to observe a quetzal for a solid couple of minutes, due to our guides' timing, effort & diligence 🫶🏼 Their knowledge about birds & nature is massive, and even if you don't see quetzales, you'll still get to hike a beautiful forest trail & see multiple tucans, humming birds, brown-backed solitaires and other birds. Can 100% recommend, was one of the best experiences I had in Guatemala!
