Their culinary is unique, tasty and can only be found in these areas. You will have the chance to try these during the tour.

The Valbona pass also offers a spectacular view of the Balkan Peaks and “Bjeshket e Nemuna” or the Accursed Mountains. “Bjeshket e Nemuna” is a national park in Gjakova and Peja in Kosovo, near the borders with Albania and Montenegro. On your way, you will walk through some beautiful landscapes and wild forests. You might even see some shepherd’s passing by with their flock. When reaching the top of the Valbona Pass, you will experience a serious shot of adrenaline. Overnight in a guesthouse in Valbona.

Cerem

Your next destination on your Peaks of the Balkans tour is Cerem. Before you begin your trekking of today, you will have to use transport to the starting point. On your hike, you will pass through forests and meadows. You will arrive in an area that looks like a canyon and the only place that still has snow, even during the summer. You will have the option to hike to the highest peak of Montenegro, Zla Kolate peak, which will add another 3 hours of hiking (10 hours in total). Another magnificent element that you cross during your hike is a stone surface on the side of a mountain that looks like the face of a miserable old man. You will also pass a cave with an extremely cold wind along the trail of which no one knows the exit. So, all in all, there is definitely enough extraordinary things to see during the hike, besides the mountains. You will arrive at the shepherd’s huts in Cerem, which is located high in the mountains, 1300m above sea level.

You will also pass the only National Reserve in Albania, which has brown bears and the last population of approximately 40 lynxes in the Balkans. It is a beautiful trail with the highest point being 2100 meters above sea level. You will have a chance to enjoy a nice coffee or other drink at some of the shepherd’s hut villages. Doberdol, your destination for today, is about 1800m above sea level and this is where you will have another overnight in a shepherd’s hut. The village is beautiful and you can choose from different food options made from ingredients out of the region. The beds, however, are definitely not hotel beds, just matrasses and the conditions are basic.

Gjakova

After you have had the chance to recharge from the Peaks of the Balkans hikes, you will have a short city tour of Gjakova. The city has the oldest and largest bazaar of Kosovo. Even though, it got destroyed during the first Balkan wars, the second world war and the Kosovo war, the bazaar got rebuilt again to its old state and is a nice place to enjoy a meal or to take a look at the stores that sell traditional clothing and items. We will also visit the clock tower and the Hadum mosque. The latter was built in the 16th century and somehow managed to survive the wars. Nowadays it shows the beginning of Islamic architecture in the Balkans, covered in stunning arabesque decorations. The transfer back to Tirana (Albania) remarks the end of this fairy trail.

The 7 day self guided tour was a great experience. The hiking trails were easy to follow and had a nice difficulty for beginner and experienced hikers alike. We had spectacular views thanks to the good weather. The accomodations were welcoming and clean, the food decent. Above all we appreciated the good contact we had with the choosebalkans team that checked whether we were safe and were flexible in adjusting the tour. Would definitely recommend!

The self-guided 7 day tour was an amazing experience. With a bit of luck (absolutely fantastic weather) the trails were in very good condition and the hikes were not that hard. The accommodations along the way varied from a basic hut to hotels but they all seemed very appropriate for the surroudings. The 'easy'option for Day 4 is very easy and decidedly less interesting, but it does allow for some rest. Brikena from Choose Balkans did very good job checking in and managing transportation. Highly recommended

It was my first time doing a long-distance hike through a tour operator, so I wasn’t sure what to expect—but everything went smoothly from start to finish. All the accommodations were clean, comfortable, and welcoming, with good food along the way. Brikena did regular check-ins, which made me feel safe and supported. The GPS files worked perfectly, and the hikes were both challenging and amazing. I really appreciated how well-organized everything was, with no hiccups at all. I’d definitely recommend this tour to solo hikers, and I’d be happy to book another trip with them in the future.

What an adventure it has been. And everything has been organized so well. The maps, pickups on time, great guesthouses that welcome you warmly. Being a solo traveler, this takes allot of maybe a bit difficult things out of your hands. Only thing you have to do is walk! The communication and help of Brikena has been super clear and great as well. You really feel that she cares about her clients and she is there with you along the way if you need anything. All in all, highly recommend Choose Balkans!
