What To Expect
Shanghai History Museum tells the tale of Shanghai's modern metropolis from ancient times until today. It houses about 110,000 items, including such notable relics as the Zhen Yuan General's Bronze Cannon, Wu You's Banquet at Yuyuan Garden, the cotton-processing machine manufactured by Britain's Dobson and Barlow, the manuscript of the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) Pictorial of Dianshizhai, the square portrait of the nomination and election of the Republic of China period's presidential candidate, the Shanghai HSBC copper lion, the baizi bridal sedan chair of the Republic of China period (1912-49), the manuscript of Shanghai Historical Collection, a map of old Shanghai and the Charity Report.
People's Square (Renmin Guang Chang)
This is the morning tour highlight. People Square, in the heart of the city is a vast green area surrounded by great buildings on all sides. Here you have the opportunity to feed the doves to pray for the world peace.

5.00Good tour of the sites. Doing it solo and off-peak season, so it ended up being a private tour. Many of the sites were still crowded. However, it moved to my pace. We were able to finish in under 4 hours. Guide was knowledgeable and friendly. January is cool for walking, but would like that over the heat of summer.

2.00I booked the tour for the morning.Instead of 8am it started at 8.50am. At 12 o'clock I got out of the little van. After a 20 minute drive we arrived at the museum. There he gave me the flyer, told me three sentences about the museum and then said goodbye. I was then allowed to walk through the museum in 50 minutes. It is worth seeing and I can recommend it. Then we continued to Jade Temple. We drove there for 25 minutes. Once there, he told a lot of interesting things about Buddhism. That was very informative and beautiful. Unfortunately only very quickly and somehow I had the feeling that he just wanted to work it off. Lock up, we drove another 20 minutes. Arrived in a jade and pearl shop. A saleswoman received me there. She told me some stuff about the jade stone and tried to sell me something. That's where the tour ended. I felt a bit uncomfortable because I felt like the guide didn't feel like it. He has said several times that he has to go straight to the next tour and does not have time for lunch. During the ride, he just talked to the driver. The guide has a great and interesting knowledge. Think it would have been much nicer if he really enjoyed his job. At least that morning, he seemed stressed, tense and disinterested. In the end, he was upset that I didn't want to buy anything and said "You could have told me if she didn't want to buy anything. The Germans don't like to go shopping"

2.00Afternoon tour: I was positively surprised to be the only person doing the tour, and so I had a private driver, luxury SUV and tour guide for myself. We started at the Yu Gardens, which was quite enchanting, but the French quarter isn’t worth it, and the silk factory is 100% a tourist trap. The Bund is quite impressive too. The tour guide had good English, but was not able to blend the highlights with the history of the city and country. In summary, take a taxi to the Gardens and then to the Bund and you’ll be better off. Cheers
