Yu Garden (Yuyuan)
Yu Garden, is a classical garden with a history of over 450 years and is known as the jewel of Jiangnan gardens. Yu Garden was originally built during the Jiajing and Wanli years of the Ming Dynasty, more than 450 years ago. The garden was initially the private garden of the Ming Dynasty official Pan Yunduan, and its name means "to delight one's parents and provide for their well-being in their old age," hence the name "Yu Garden". The garden is exquisitely designed and tranquil, featuring pavilions, towers, rockeries, ponds, and more. It is a rare elegant retreat amidst the bustling city. The garden also displays hundreds of plaques and inscriptions by famous artists, as well as a rich collection of stone sculptures. Yu Garden is not only one of the five classical gardens in Shanghai but also the only well-preserved Jiangnan classical garden in the urban area.
Chenghuang Miao (Yuyuan Garden)
The Shanghai City God Temple, or Chenghuang Miao, is a historic Taoist temple located in the heart of Shanghai's Old City. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty (around 1403-1424), the temple is dedicated to local deities who are believed to protect the city and its people. Surrounding the temple is a bustling marketplace filled with traditional Chinese architecture, shops, and eateries, offering visitors a glimpse into Shanghai's rich cultural heritage. It's a must-visit destination for those seeking a blend of spiritual significance and local flavor.

We were with my ship 6 for Easter on the Asia trip and had visited Shanghai as the penultimate stop. Unfortunately only one day, because TUI had not ensured the board delivery and thus lost a day of Shanghai port. Shanghai is a very large city with 30 million inhabitants, which means that 6 hours of excursion is actually not enough. We booked a private tour with VIP bus and in terms of care - we had two competent good English speaking guides and a super VIP bus for us six people with excellent chauffeur and very luxurious leather armchair and service. This allowed us to relax a bit between stops and especially our teenagers. Somewhat disappointing, but not attributable to the tour organizer, is the old town of Shanghai, which has been rebuilt and is more of a shopping center/paradise, but with a very nice Chinese garden- newly created and crowded with tourists. Very nice was at the end of the JadeTemple, in between an exquisite tea ceremony -the view of the new business district and the care as well as at the end of the Silk Museum, in which we chopped some silk products, which we also thought were not overpriced. Overall a good but too short trip we recommend to visitors who do not necessarily want to shop and not necessarily an overcrowded neighborhood - not the old town of Shanghai, but rather the temple complexes and you have to remember that the city is so large and it is difficult to travel long distances within a short time. Many thanks to our tour organizer and to our supervisors during the tour! Finally, it should be mentioned that we had a very good Peking duck meal together with our attendant in the shopping center of the old town.

Seriously, this tour is GOLD! Our guide Leo was like a walking Shanghai Wikipedia! The itinerary? Genius-level timing – we zipped from Yuyuan's tranquil gardens to Bund selfies without any rush. The route covered ALL highlights but felt relaxed. If you wanna see Shanghai's best view AND laugh non-stop with your squad, book this now. Trust me, that guide deserves a raise!
