Negombo
Nestled along the western coast of Sri Lanka, Negombo exudes an enchanting blend of colonial charm and vibrant local culture. Renowned for its stunning beaches and bustling fish markets, this coastal city offers visitors a myriad of experiences to savor. Wander through its labyrinthine streets lined with colorful colonial-era architecture, sample fresh seafood delicacies, or embark on a serene boat ride along the Dutch Canal. Negombo invites travelers to immerse themselves in its rich tapestry of history, nature, and culinary delights.
Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress
Sigiriya Rock Fortress that dominates the Sigiriya area was the capital of the King Kasyapa who ruled in the 5th century AD. The rock was once shaped into the shape of a lion, hence gaining its name. Now only the giant paws remain at the entrance to the climb up the rock. You can get to see the gardens and advanced irrigation systems that Kasyapa had built in his fortress. To this day the ponds remain full of water (though it is no longer as clean), and the remains of the walls and moats of his fortress can be seen. However the most marvelous aspect of Sigiriya, that brought it international fame, is the unfading rock paintings that continue to confuse many experts. Despite being over a millennia old the colors and shapes remain clear and bright as if they were newly painted. Once you return to the base from your climb up the rock, you can also visit the Sigiriya Museum which has some excellent pieces.

Christo Alvis collected us right on time and had made sure to check the arrangements yesterday. He was a careful driver, very necessary due to the mad tuk tuks, dogs, motorcycles etc on the roads. The journey from Negombo took around 3 hours much less than we were expecting and we even stopped for breakfast at an exceptionally clean restaurant. The string hoppers with curry, and papaya juice was excellent. We hadn't been planning to do the village tour but as Christo said- we needed to have lunch somewhere- and actually it was a great addition to the day. Sigiraya was worth the climb and the Dambulla Cave Temple also an experience. Wear proper shoes and don't change back into sandals until after the temple. Take black socks to wear in the temple as the ground is hot and the floor dusty and would ruin white ones. Men as well as women need their knees covered to go into the temple. A great day, left hotel at 6 am and due to being lucky with little traffic we were back by 5. Definitely worth stumping up for a private driver as there would be a heck of a lot of hanging around for people slower on the 320000 steps (joking- not quite that many) and also multiple pick up and drop offs would be a nuisance. If you can choose a driver, choose Christo as he was fantastic!
