What To Expect

Start your adventure at the Icelandic Mountain Guides Base Camp by Sólheimajökull glacier. Here, your guide will provide you with all the necessary equipment—ice axe, crampons, harness, and helmet—and explain how to use them safely. From Base Camp, you’ll walk toward the glacier and step onto the ice. The hike takes you across dramatic formations, winding ridges, and deep crevasses. Along the way, your guide will share insights into how glaciers form and change, and point out fascinating details in the ice and surrounding landscape. The highlight of the tour is a visit to a recently discovered blue ice cave. Formed naturally by summer meltwater, the cave reveals shimmering crystal walls and striking shades of blue. You’ll have time to explore inside and take photos while your guide explains how these caves appear and transform each season. After experiencing the cave, you’ll hike back across the glacier, enjoying more views of this ever-changing frozen world before returning to Base Camp where the tour ends.

  • A glacier experience like no other

Walking up the Sólheimajökull glacier was an experience of a lifetime. We booked the morning tour and the glacier was still wonderfully quiet. Our guide Sam was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, pointing out all kinds of interesting features along the way, including the striking layers of black volcanic ash running through the ice, something truly unique to Iceland. We even got to enter a natural ice cave, which was a real highlight. The sheer scale of the ice is something you simply cannot grasp until you are standing on it. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a taste of Iceland's incredible wild nature.

We booked for a tour and the group we had during a March weekend was 7 people including us. The Tour went through 3 caves and require us to repel twice which was a unique experience. Our guide Andres was informational as well as funny. We we allotted extra time compared to what was advertised to do extra activities such as the “Viking Push up”. 10/10 would book another trip for a more challenging experience.

  • Absolutely Unforgettable Glacier Hike

Our glacier hike was hands down the best thing we did in Iceland, and a huge reason for that was our guide, Geert. From the moment we met him, he was engaging, knowledgeable, and just genuinely cool to talk to. He shared fascinating information about the glacier and went above and beyond to show us things we never would have seen on our own. As someone who is not athletic or confident on the ice, Geert effortlessly led us into caves, crevasses, and incredible spots while always making sure everyone felt safe and comfortable. He was incredibly patient as we tried new things and encouraged us every step of the way. You could tell he truly loves what he does, and that enthusiasm made the experience even more special. If you’re lucky enough to have Geert as your guide, you’re in for an amazing adventure. This experience alone made our trip to Iceland unforgettable, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
