Seljalandsfoss
Seljalandsfoss waterfall is one of Iceland's most stunning natural attractions. It is located along the South Coast and about a two-hour drive from Reykjavik. A pathway allows visitors to walk behind the cascading water, making it a favourite spot among photographers.
Skogafoss
Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s biggest and most beautiful waterfalls, with an astounding width of 25 meters (82 feet) and a drop of 60 meters (197 feet). It appeared in the first episode of season 8 of Game of Thrones. In this episode, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen ride dragons and land next to a set of stunning two-stage cascades of waterfalls. Skogafoss was part of it, and the other waterfalls and rock formations were added digitally.

We took this private South Coast tour from Reykjavik and it was one of the absolute highlights of our entire Iceland trip. If you’re debating between the Golden Circle and the South Coast, choose the South Coast — the landscapes here are dramatically more spectacular! Having said that, it is a very long day (about 10 hours) as our first stop was 90 minutes from downtown Reykjavik. Our excellent guide, Emil, is an Icelandic native, picked us up directly from our hotel in a comfortable vehicle and the day felt completely personalized and relaxed. No crowds, no rushing — just pure Iceland at its finest. The stops were all world-class: • Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss — two incredibly powerful and beautiful waterfalls (we even walked behind one!). Emil supplied us with raincoats that were much needed. If you are physically able, climb the 386 (or so) steps to the top of the waterfall. The climate actually changes on the way. • Solheimajokull Glacier — an impressive outlet glacier with striking blue ice. Again, if you are able, take a walk down the black beach to the glacier where you can stand on the glacier itself. • Reynisfjara Beach — the famous black sand beach with massive basalt columns and thundering waves. Truly otherworldly. • Dyrholaey — we are told that there are stunning cliff views and sea stacks. We skipped this because of the low visibility at that part of the day. • Time in charming Vik to soak it all in where we had lunch at a charming local restaurant chosen by our guide. The scenery along the South Coast is next-level — dramatic mountains, glaciers, black sand beaches, and powerful Atlantic waves. It felt wilder and more varied than the Golden Circle, and we couldn’t stop taking photos. Our local guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and shared great insights throughout the day. Everything ran smoothly with admissions included and a perfect pace. If you want to see Iceland’s most jaw-dropping coastal landscapes in comfort and style, book this private tour immediately. It was worth every penny and one of the best experiences we had in Iceland! Highly, highly recommend.
