Situated atop a rock, the Gadaladeniya Temple complex was built during the reign of King Buvanekabahu iν in 1344. The first building within the temple complex is the cruciform subsidiary shrine. Each wing of this is the cruciform subsidiary shrine. Each wing of this shrine houses the Buddha image and is crowned by a small dagoba. The interior is adorned with attractive wall paintings. Located 2 km south-west of the Gadaladeniya Temple, the imposing, bright white Lankatilaka Temple is probably the most impressive of the three shrines. Visitors arriving by car enter from the western side of complex, while those on foot reach the site by a steep flight of rock-cut steps on the eastern side. The west door leads to a series of Hindu shrines. However, the main attraction here is the Buddhist image house, the entrance to which lies on the eastern side. Flanking the door-way leading into the chamber are two guardian gajasingahas (elephant-lions). Inside, there is a seated Buddha statue under a makaratoranasurrounded by Kandyan-era paintings on the walls and ceiling. To the left of the building is a rock inscription detailing the construction of the temple, which was completed in 1344. Dedicated to the guardian deity Kataragama, the Embekke Devale lies 2 km south-east of the Lankatilaka Temple. The shrine is famous for the richly carved wooden pillars of its digge (drummers’ pavilion). The intricate design on each of these pillars portrays flowers, dancers, soldiers and wrestles among other themes. Just behind the digge is the main shrine, and to its right is a subsidiary shrine with a Buddha statue of a peacock, the bird associated with Kataragama.

Kandy is both an administrative and religious city and is also the capital of the Central Province. Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988. You will visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, this golden roofed Temple houses the relic of Lord Buddha’s tooth. Also visit Ceylon Tea Museum. Located in the Hantane Estate, the Ceylon Tea Museum occupies a former four-storey tea factory dating from 1925. Exhibits on the ground floor include drying furnaces, grinders and sorters used in the 19th century. The highlights here, however, are the miniature working model of a tea factory and an 80-year-old tea bush. The first floor contains displays on two of Sri Lanka’s greatest tea pioneers: James Taylor and Thomas Lipton. There is a small collection of Taylor’s personal articles, which includes his books and walking stick, as well as a display on the life of Lipton. The floor also houses other tea-related paraphernalia, including Sri Lanka’s oldest surviving packet of tea in its original packaging, dating from 1944. We had our 17 day tour of Sri Lanka. Our driver and guide was Prasanna from Sri Lankan Safe Tours. Our car was very roomy and comfortable with good aircon. Prasanna greeted us every day with a big smile full of enthusiasm to make sure our day would be special. We felt very comfortable with Prasanna’s driving and experience. Our accommodation was very comfortable with Prasanna organising check-ins and delivering our luggage. The food was amazing. We experienced the diversity of the country from city, mountains and beaches. Prasanna has wonderful local knowledge and was very patient and prepared to adapt to our needs. Prasanna took many photos for us which helped record our experiences. We would highly recommend Prasanna and Sri Lankan Safe Tours for a comprehensive, relaxed, informative and safe way to experience Sri Lanka and its wonderful scenery, history and people.

We have had a wonderful 2 weeks tour with our guide Thassa, driver Amila and assistant Sampath. They were all very helpful and respectful, and we could trust their judgement and experience during our entire tour, despite the difficult situation and floods happening in the country. They have always found good alternative solutions. We can highly recommend their services in the beautiful country of Sri Lanka.

We arrived on 27th November for the start of our 10 day tour just as the Cyclone was about to do its damage. We met our driver Prasanna at the airport exactly as arranged and were transferred to our first hotel. Unfortunately, the Cyclone disrupted our planned schedule but Prasanna skilfully re-arranged our itinerary. Prasanna maintained a positive and enthusiastic approach to what was essentially a disrupted trip due to the damage caused so many of the areas we had planned to visit. He was never short of ideas as to what else we could do. He saved our trip! Prasanna is also very knowledgeable and answered the numerous questions we had, not only about the areas we visited but also general things about the country. We cannot recommend this organisation enough.

From our first contact Lanka Safe Tours were excellent. We wanted to do the traditional tour route in reverse order so we could start at a beach resort in Mirissa as we were travelling on to the Maldives. This was not a problem and easily accommodated. Our guide and driver on the tour was Prasanna. Prasa was excellent- knowledgeable and very accommodating to requests and suggestions. His English was great, which made life easier. He was very flexible with the itinerary which was essential to avoid any tropical rain showers so as to get the best from every place we visited. He navigated us safely through the hectic Sri Lankan traffic in his comfortable air conditioned vehicle. Water was provided throughout. He was even prepared to suffer our Spotify playlists via Bluetooth on the vehicle’s tablet. We could also share his WiFi. Both company and driver highly recommended for their 5 star performance! Thank you so much for such an amazing holiday!

We experienced a 12-day tour of Sri Lanka, concluded with 3 days of well-deserved relaxation at the sea. The itinerary was complete and well balanced: from the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, to Sigiriya Rock, passing through Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, the safari in Yala and the beautiful beaches of the south. Special thanks to our guide KAVISHAN, always kind and prepared, who in addition to the main stops made us discover less touristy and really authentic places. The agency took care of every detail, adapting the trip to our requests and making the experience smooth and pleasant. A trip that we recommend to those who want to know Sri Lanka in all its variety!
