Our Historic Island tour operates on various days (check our calendar) and delivers you in comfort, on minibus service, to the finest and most historic of sights on the Isle of Lewis. It is the best way to experience the Island, without the hassle of driving, you just soak up the amazing, dream like landscapes of rugged island perched on the wild North Atlantic.
This tourer brings you to such outstanding places as ancient standing stones of Calanais (older than Stonehenge!), the stunning Carloway Broch perched high above the crofting communities of Carloway, to the Blackhouse village at Gearrannan village, highlighting the way we used to live, and the change to see the way we used to live in summer on the moors at the Bru Àirigh. Save the drive, enjoy the sights and get the chance to ask driver guide any questions you may have.

Callanish Standing Stones
We will have around 45 minutes at this site to allow you to explore them to their fullest. There is a gift shop, cafe / restaurant, exhibition and toilets at this stop. There is a fee for the exhibition but not (currently) for access to the Stones. This, globally unique, site allows you to experience megalithic stones at one of the United Kingdoms most amazing historic sites. The Stones lie in the shape of a cross, as we know the Christian Cross today, but of course, 5,000 years ago, this symbol was not associated with Christianity. Even more exciting for us is that they are older then the stones at Stonehenge. Currently the Visitor Centre is being renovated and may not be operational but the Stones can still be visited. If you are not back at the vehicle on time then, for the sake of other guests, we will assume you have opted to make your own way back. It is important to consider this point prior to joining any long lines at cafes or attractions.
Carloway Broch
We have 45 minutes at this location. Toilets and a small visitor centre are usually open at this site. There is no fee to access this site but donations are encouraged for upkeep. https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/dun-carloway/ Growing up, this was favourite attraction to visit. In those days visitor numbers were very low and we were able to play here all day pretending it was castle. Things have changed just a bit. This monument, built around 200 BCE, lasted as a home and defence for around 100 years but Dun Carloway may have been used for almost 1000 years which is very impressive. For those with the surname Morrison, it is thought that this was a fortress for your clan as late as 5000 CE. If you are not back at the vehicle on time then, for the sake of other guests, we will assume you have opted to make your own way back. It is important to consider this point prior to joining any long lines at cafes or attractions.

Just back from this morning’s historic island tour with Mac - it was terrific! He has a great style, is full of knowledge and easy company. Plenty of time at each stop and a few that were not on the usual tours. All a bit special. Mac brought to life the history, culture and stories. 1000 times would recommend! I was shocked at the price of the other tours - this is an absolute gem. Safe transport, fab knowledge and great company. Not to mention the tea, coffee, biccies, loo breaks, and a lot of laughs. What else do you need?

What a fabulous day out! Mac is the consummate tour guide - personable, informative and entertaining. We learned so much from him about all things Hebridean - island life, culture and heritage. The sites he took us to were beautiful, the pacing was relaxed, and his minibus is equipped with snacks and drinks. Our tour with him was one of the highlights of our 2 week trip to the Outer Hebrides and we’d love to return and do one of his other tours. Great value for a memorable day out. Many thanks Mac!
