Orkney Odyssey offer a number of different tours in an electric VW campervan. You can tailor make your tour package or elect an Orkney highlights day tour like me and my partner did. Collected & dropped off at our hotel by Ian or guide for the day. Ian is really friendly and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Orkney. Highly recommended.

If you see a tour available with Ian - you’re in luck and you should hop on it - it is an intimate (only 4-6 per tour), personable and pretty spectacular! My wife and I were taken back by the amount of history that has unfolded over Orkney over the last 5000+ years - literally. Ian was a gracious and full of all kinds of information wanting to make sure we heard the back story to all the sites from the standing stones to Skara Brae, where he actually worked before becoming a private guide, to the incredible role that Orkney played during WWII. He topped it off with a stop along the rugged west coast to check out the booming North Atlantic too. You’ll be whisked along in a comfortable VW bus through tiny towns and country side covered with every shade of green you can image. The cathedral in Kirkwall was particularly awesome as he unfolded the history of the church’s name sake and made the connections to Orkney’s Nordic past. No regrets on this tour 👍🏼

Unfortunately, the tour did not initially go as planned, as my husband became ill and could not participate. However, Iain made it completely easy for my mother, my aunt, and me to participate in the tour instead. He conveniently sent us the bill afterwards – everything was very straightforward and customer-oriented. The tour itself was simply beautiful. Iain guided us to numerous highlights and shared an incredible amount of interesting and informative knowledge. He took plenty of time, patiently answered every question, and ensured that we felt completely comfortable. The bus was very comfortable, and Iain was extremely accommodating. He was particularly attentive to my aunt, always helping her with her seatbelt by handing her the strap. In our small group, there was also a gentleman with limited vision. Iain actively advocated for him and used his good connections to allow him to get closer to some attractions than would normally be possible. This willingness to help and humanity impressed us greatly. We would book this tour again at any time. It was undoubtedly one of the absolute highlights of our trip. Thank you very much, Iain! 😊

An outstanding private tour with Iain. He was extremely knowledgable about the area and just a delight for the entire day……from pickup at the guest house to our return. He was very flexible based on our interests and made this a one of a kind experience. You would be lucky to tour with him and we are veteran worldwide travelers.

WOW! What a brilliant day. Iain bought to life all the amazing things that we saw on Orkney. His vast knowledge and obvious passion for imparting the incredible history, folklore and current way of living in this unique and fascinating place, had us totally captivated and by days end we both felt a very real sense of connection to Orkney. If you are choosing a tour, our advice would be to pick Iain at Orkney Odyssey. The vehicle was a modern, quiet, electric van which was very comfortable, with great views for all passengers. We really liked that it was a small tour (actually just we two), which meant that we had lots of time for questions and chatting in a very welcoming environment, learning heaps, while having a very fun day. Very highly recommend!

Wind, stone, and sea—stunning landscapes, ancient sites, and the lingering imprint of Orkney’s role in World War II. Orkney is striking on its own, but with the right guide, it becomes a narrative you can step into.I spent a day and a half on a private tour with Orkney Odyssey, and it completely changed how I experienced the islands. Iain is an exceptional storyteller—he doesn’t just share facts, he layers history, folklore, and place in a way that makes everything feel connected and alive. The itinerary was built around my interests, with a thoughtful pace that let us fully take in places like the Italian Chapel, Ring of Brodgar, Tomb of the Eagles, Unstan Chambered Cairn, Broch of Gurness, and the Churchill Barriers—plus a number of quieter, off-the-beaten-path stops.I really appreciated the focus on sustainability and respect for the landscape. It felt like a more meaningful way to experience Orkney.Iain was knowledgeable, flexible, and had a great sense of humor—more like exploring with someone who knows the islands deeply than being on a tour. Highly recommend.

We had a 3 hour tour with Iain and even though we live in Orkney, we came away much more knowledgeable than when we started. The tour was for 3 of us - me, my husband and our 7 year old daughter, Lucy. Lucy picked the itinerary of St Magnus Cathedral, Italian Chapel and tales of witches. Iain was so accommodating and patient, taking the time to answer any of her questions, making sure that all answers and tales were suitable for her age. All 3 of us had a great time and thank Iain very much for an enjoyable Sunday morning. We would absolutely recommend a tour with Orkney Odyssey.

We had a fantastic time on today’s Orkney Odyssey tour with Iain. He was incredibly knowledgeable and brought the history and landscapes of Orkney to life in a really engaging way. What really stood out was how well he interacted with our 7-year-old daughter, Lucy—he made sure she felt included, answered all her questions with patience, and kept her interested throughout the day. It made the whole experience even more special for our family. Highly recommend!
