What To Expect

During this experience, you will first learn about the history and cultural meaning of mochi in Japan—why it has been cherished for centuries as a symbol of good fortune and community. After this short introduction, you will take part in the traditional mochi pounding process, using a wooden mallet and mortar to turn freshly steamed rice into soft, chewy mochi. Once the pounding is finished, we will guide you through the Japanese custom of saying “Itadakimasu” before eating, an expression of gratitude for food. Then comes the fun part—you will shape your own mochi and choose from three different flavors to enjoy. Whether you prefer sweet red bean paste, roasted soybean flour (kinako), or savory miso, you can customize your mochi to your taste and savor it fresh on the spot. This hands-on activity is interactive, delicious, and a perfect way to connect with Japanese tradition through food.
