Embark on an immersive escape room adventure set on the edge of Edinburgh's old surgical district. Descend into a world of grave robbery, mystery, and malpractice as you enter the basement study of a 19th-century anatomist to investigate reports of a mysterious crime... The year is 1829 and the city is a leading center for medical learning. Anatomical teaching relies on fresh 'cadavers' which are always in short supply. Grave robbery is rife and there have even been cases of murder for dissection. You have just one hour to locate Dr. Malcolm's journal before he returns from lecturing at the nearby Surgeons' Hall, and he won't take kindly to uninvited guests. A fun, thrilling activity for groups of 2-8 people, Ages 12+. Your team must work together to solve the puzzles and uncover the mystery. See, touch and even smell Edinburgh's macabre past! Esacape The Past are located at BF01, 25 Nicolson Square, just a 5 minute walk from the royal mile. The activity lasts approximately 1 hour and may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

The Anatomist was a very enjoyable escape room using the real life story of Burke and Hare as an inspiration for the room's theme. Burke and Hare were 19th century residents of Edinburgh who murdered people to supply medical student with cadavers for dissection. The room was well-constructed. Nothing was broken or didn't work well, which is sometimes the case at other less meticulously maintained escape rooms. The puzzles were interesting and varied, mostly of moderate difficulty so the room's difficulty rating on the website is accurate. Our host was friendly, in constume, and did a good job describing the room and setting the macabre mood. We didn't ask for any hints but the host gave us a couple of little nudges when he thought we were stuck. My only critique was the over-reliance on locks of various types, having to solve a puzzle to get a key or combination. But this is generally true of most escape rooms. Some of the more elaborate escape rooms use puzzles that don't involve a lot of locks and those can be more ingenious and fun to solve. Overall, it was one of the more fun and interesting rooms we've visited. If you happen to be in Edinburgh and have a couple of hours, I highly recommend the Escape the Past escape room.

Beth was very energetic and thorough and seemed to take great pleasure in servicing us. The room itself was full of exciting chains and locks, enough to make even the most experienced aficionado go weak at the knees! We were keen to try something new for our anniversary and came away with an unforgettable experience, shaky and fully satisified.

Had a fantastic time doing The Anatomist escape room with my family for my birthday. Some of the clues were quite challenging & we did ask for help a couple of times but overall it was very enjoyable & I would definitely recommend it.

We have done quite a few escape rooms over the years. The vast majority of the ones in Edinburgh, other cities in the UK, and several ones across the world. The Anatomist stands out as one of the best, if not THE best of them all. The atmosphere, attention to detail, well thought out puzzles, the ambiance, our fantastic games master Edmund - it was brilliant! As much as we wanted to (and did) escape within the hour, we also didn't want this thoroughly enjoyable experience to end. 10/10!

Our guide, Edmund, was very cheerful and welcoming. He explained the back story very well. With the experience itself it was just the right level of difficulty, and the rooms were atmospheric in terms of setting and lighting. Edmund very much stayed in the background and only really stepped in when he saw we were stumbling for too long

We went for my son’s 12th birthday party and we really enjoyed it. It was tense and scary but not to scary. Shout out to Charlotte who when we asked if we could have no jump scares made sure that there weren’t any. She also gave us some clues when we needed them. It was very realistic and really took you back in time.
