Embark on an immersive escape room adventure set on the edge of Edinburgh's old surgical district. Descend into a world of grave robbery, mystery, and malpractice as you enter the basement study of a 19th-century anatomist to investigate reports of a mysterious crime... The year is 1829 and the city is a leading center for medical learning. Anatomical teaching relies on fresh 'cadavers' which are always in short supply. Grave robbery is rife and there have even been cases of murder for dissection. You have just one hour to locate Dr. Malcolm's journal before he returns from lecturing at the nearby Surgeons' Hall, and he won't take kindly to uninvited guests. A fun, thrilling activity for groups of 2-8 people, Ages 12+. Your team must work together to solve the puzzles and uncover the mystery. See, touch and even smell Edinburgh's macabre past! Esacape The Past are located at BF01, 25 Nicolson Square, just a 5 minute walk from the royal mile. The activity lasts approximately 1 hour and may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

Fantastic experience from booking to the room. We had booked another escape room but due to an error we couldn't do it and we found this one with an availability slot. Rosie was so kind, understanding and helpful. She let us wait in the warm until the room was ready and we were not disappointed! Great story and performance by Rosie. Loved the puzzles and we managed to get out in the nick of time. Loved the historical roots for Edinburgh. Thank you so so much, it saved our night and ended my birthday on such a high💜

Me and a few friends had a really good time solving The Anatomist escape experience and completed the challenge with a scant 9 seconds to spare! The Gamesmaster (Edmund) who introduced us to the experience was absolutely lovely and he knew exactly when it was appropriate for him to step in and give us hints if we ever stalled during the process. The puzzles were a really good balance between challenging but not so difficult that you were constantly at a loss for the solution. But a bit of Lateral thinking was definitely required for some of the puzzles. The actual set/environment is really well done and once you make it into the secret study you're blessed with a fantastically creepy, edwardian horror themed laboratory! All told, this was a really, really good experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has any interest in trying an escape room! Thanks for showing us a great time Escape The Past!

This was my first experience of an escape room. I thought I'd probably enjoy it but I found this one exceeded my expectations about escape rooms. It was possible for different members of the group to try and solve different aspects at once but also easy enough to communicate as a group. We found it a really good challenge and there was plenty to excite, surprise us and fool us! Also the Burke and Hare theme was just fantastic!

Great escape room, Beth was super friendly and funny, and then also an incredible actor when we got into the room. The puzzles were great, nothing was too frustrating and it all felt very immersive and flowed very well. I’d definitely visit again if I was local, time was 50:42 for a fairly experienced team of 3.

We went as a family of 4 including an 8 year old and an 11 year old and we all loved it. We managed to escape with 20 seconds to spare and all played our part. A great family experience. Rosie is brilliant at explaining it as only I had attended them before.

Really good experience from start to end. I booked the escape room for a birthday party ( my son’s ) and they were brilliant responding to my many emails regarding numbers and it being age appropriate etc. On the day, they were super accommodating and Julia did a great job with the amount of hints she gave to help the group or not. The anatomist was a brilliant escape room, I will be recommending!

Turned up 15 mins early so as to not hold up the start for the organizer person/host. Was told abruptly by the woman in the little antechamber at the entrance to leave as they weren't ready for me yet. Would have cost her nothing to be polite and recognize that as they haven't provided a waiting area as many other escape rooms seem to have, people meeting the rest of their group there will make the evidently unforgivable decision of actually entering the building. Thankfully she wasn't armed.

Super little escape room, based under a church. The theme, was upon solving a murder mystery, before the possible perpetrators, ( Burke & Hare ? ) returned. Clues were skilfully located, in the objects and furniture etc, in the recreated historical Victorian house rooms., very good. First time for this sort of thing, and would do so again. Almost escaped, but not quite!

This was one of our favourite escape rooms. The layout was great and we loved the puzzles. Rosie was a fantastic games master and we’re looking forward to returning to do another room soon.

This was a fantastic escape room! The room, which is based on Edinburgh’s true history, had a really great mix of different challenges. Our host Beth was wonderful, she really helped bring the story to life and gave small nudges along the way to help us when needed. We had a really enjoyable time and would definitely recommend!
