Maiden Tower
The Maiden Tower is a Baku landmark, a much loved symbol of the city and of Azerbaijan. It looms dark and enigmatic, looking out to sea from the southern edge of Baku´s old, walled city, the Icheri Sheher. The origins of the tower are shrouded in mystery - no-one knows for certain when it was built or what it was built for or even how it acquired its name Maiden Tower (Qiz qalasi). No written sources survive that record its construction or original function.
Palace of Happiness
This was the home of the millionaire Muxtarov who built it as a surprise Valentine gift for his (second) wife. She is supposed to have adored a similar building she'd seen while doing the 'grand tour' in Italy, so Muxtarov simply paid the renowned Qasumov brothers to build a copy. This was the topping to a relationship which reads straight from the pages of fairy-tale legend. Lowly-born Muxtarov, son of a Mardakan carter, was a self-educated technician who became a major supplier of support equipment to the burgeoning oil industry. He fell in love with the daughter of his Ossetian aristocrat host while on business in Vladikavkaz, but his lack of pedigree resulted in the blank refusal of his petitions to marry her.

We joined the Baku sightseeing tour as a family and honestly had a great time. The route was well planned, we saw both the Old City and the modern parts of Baku without feeling rushed, and everything was very well organized. Our guide, Rafiq, was super friendly, knowledgeable, and patient – he explained the history in an interesting way and also helped us with photos and small tips about the city. We really enjoyed the tour and would definitely recommend it to other families visiting Baku.

I absolutely loved this tour! Our guide, Elvin, was not only super knowledgeable but also had this funny way of explaining history that made everyone smile. We expected just a short Old City walk, but it turned out to be a full journey through both ancient and modern Baku! The Flame Towers at sunset were breathtaking. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Baku for the first time! Try local restaurants that tour guide offers ( qutab, shah plow are delicious!)

Enjoyed a fantastic walking tour with the friendly and welcoming Abdullah around the old town of Buka. We were impressed with Abdullah's historical knowledge of the country, the influences of other countries and cultures on it and how it relates to the modern day Azerbaijan. The tour included many fascinating stories both old and new and there were opportunities to see first hand how the past has shaped the country and its prospects for the future. I would recommend any visitors to Baku to take this tour !

It was an incredible 3 hour session with Abdullah where the discussion went beyond just an ordinary tour guide experience. We discussed world history, politics, culture, food, music, art etc all against the backdrop of the beautiful old town in Ichreseher. Came looking for a guide and made a friend. For strictly review purposes, Abdullah is extremely knowledgeable about the history of this place and puts a lot of effort in ensuring the information provided is multi faceted. My personal recommendation for all future expeditions in the city of Baku.
