Cape Coast Castle

The Cape Coast Castle is one of the biggest castles still standing in Ghana today which was constructed by European forces, On a portion of the Gold Coast that subsequently came to be known as the Cape Coast, it all started as a Portuguese trade lodge built in 1555. The Swedish Africa Company built a permanent wooden stronghold in 1653 to facilitate the trading of gold and lumber after Sweden conquered the Cape Coast. The regional office of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board is located there, and it is currently a historical museum with a gift shop selling Ghanaian arts and crafts.

Elmina Castle

So Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine) was the name given to Elmina Castle by the Portuguese in 1482 when they erected it in Elmina, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast). Elmina and Elmina Castle is the oldest European structure still standing below the Sahara because it was the first trading post ever constructed on the Gulf of Guinea. It was initially founded as a trading colony but eventually developed into one of the most significant sites along the path of the Atlantic slave trade. A significant portion of Werner Herzog's 1987 drama film "Cobra Verde" was filmed at Elmina Castle, which is now a well-known historical landmark. It serves as a stark reminder of the history of the slave trade and is a very sought-after destination for African American travelers hoping to connect with their heritage.

Fabulous trip, very well organised. George was brilliant, he was very informative and knowledgable, and made the whole day great from beginning to end. The castles are a must when visiting Ghana, and the forest walk was a lot of fun!

  • A great day out visiting four attractions but a very emotional one.

I really enjoyed the trip with my partner however it was a very long day but we visited four attractions sites which were Cape Coast castle, Elmina Castle, Kakum national park, Assin Manso Slave River. Our guide Moses was very good and patiently drove us to the attractions and back safely and made it fun for all of us. He took pictures of the day and sent then to us .It was an emotionally charged trip, learning about the slave trade and treatment of slaves in both castles and we did the river walk of our slave ancestors. The tour guides at every attraction was excellent. The Kakum park canopy walk was a great experience but if you are scared of heights then I wouldn't recommend and walking over the rope bridge is daunting.Just a word of warning, the trip is a long about 4 hours each way and also uncomfortable due to ongoing roadworks on the main highways. The roads are very bumpy , not ideal if you travel from car sickness. Make sure you wear comfortable clothing and footwear. Also be mindful that you will be harassed at the sites by people trying to sell you things, they will ask you your name and then they will make you something with your name on it and then want you to buy it, don't fall in that trap, My only criticism of the tours provider is that you were supposed to get bottled water and snacks provided for free throughout the trip. We was only provided with one warm bottle water and NO snacks considering the length of the day. We also had to pay for our own lunch which was not included in the cost of the trip. There is also a tipping culture which was emphasied by our guide Moses and we felt we had to tip the guides in each of the attractions we entered. This can work out expensive if you are visiting four attractions, However in my opinion, there is no obligation to tip unless you want to, it is entirely your choice but be mindful you have paid a considerable amount for the trip, Having said this it was worth it, especially visiting the four sites we did and was a great experience that everyone coming should go through. Hopefully by that time, the roads will be better making the travelling more enjoyable.

Action packed day seeing a ton of spots with an energetic team that put in a 16 hour day to give us what we needed. I was at first surprised to be put with 2 other travelers since I was forced to pay a penalty as a solo traveler, which usually means you're alone. They came up with a bit of an excuse for this, which does not compute with me. So if you book solo and pay a penalty, you still may be with other travelers. In my case I loved the 2 ladies that joined me, but you may not be so lucky. Consider checking with them first, Ultimately it was still worth the price I paid and this was a professional, friendly operation.

Very smooth tour experience! My husband and I booked a private tour for an extra fee so that we could have a smaller vehicle for the (occasionally) bumpy, very long car ride since I’m prone to carsickness, and it went very well. We enjoyed traveling with our guides/driver Eben and Michael. We also had several requests/timing changes due to airline issues, and the company was very communicative and flexible, which we appreciated. You should not miss a visit to the Cape Coast region — full of very important history, and very beautiful seascapes! We loved the Kakum National Park ropes bridge. Both castles had tours led by local guides who are very knowledgeable. Lunch was delicious with a beautiful vista. Wear good shoes to walk around, and bring some cash (cedis) for lunch. Would highly recommend this tour! It is a loooong day (approx 6am to 8pm), but a very special day.

Excellent Tour – Beautiful Experience and Great Service I had an amazing experience visiting Cape Coast, Kakum National Park, and Elmina Castle. The history shared at both castles was powerful, emotional, and deeply moving — a visit I’ll never forget. Kakum’s canopy walk was such an adventure and offered breathtaking views of the forest. The van was clean, comfortable, and even had WiFi throughout the trip. The team was incredibly kind and professional — they even helped pay for my meals before I could get to an ATM, which I truly appreciated. Everything was well organized, and the service was outstanding from start to finish. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Ghana!
