The basic zone of the National Park is formed of Finland’s most southern fell chain. The area has many functions; it is for conserving nature, preserving indigenous people’s culture and serving as a destination for hiking and tourism. The National Park consists of Pyhätunturi National Park which is established in 1938 and of the Luosto area northwest of Pyhätunturi Fell. These were combined at the beginning of 2005 to form a new National Park. In southwest areas of Ukko-Luosto Fell and Lampivaara Hill forests have not been logged and some trees are as old as 400 years. The Luosto area is known for its majestic old-growth pine forests and Pyhätunturi for its geology and Sámi history. The fell chain is a collage of treeless peaks and deep ravines. Lush forests, some of them herb-rich forests, flourish in the area’s valleys and along brook banks. The Lampivaara Amethyst Mine is a sectioned off area within Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Quartz is the most common mineral in the earth’s crust after feldspar. Amethyst a rare violet coloured see-through form of quartz has been found at Lampivaara in Luosto. The clearest parts of the amethyst found at Lampivaara are classified as a gem and is often used in jewellery. Gathering amethyst gems from the National Park is forbidden except from the Amethyst mine.On the top of Lampivaara fell there is the only operative amethyst mine in Europe. It may be the only gem mine in whole world that welcomes visitors. In warm cosy Lappish hut the mine visitors hear the fascinating stories of amethyst, how it was formed 2 000 000 millions of years ago, how the place was found and how the mine is run on permanent progress principle, how people in all cultures have believed in the mystical powers of amethyst and other interesting tales found in ancient legends. After stories the visitors are guided to the mine and each will dig and find a personal lucky amethyst for keeps. The Little Mine Shop in Luosto recreation village provides information about the mine and has a fine selection of amethyst treasures, needful things and extraordinary objects. Barbeque lunch is included. We will be back in town at about 17:00.

It is not your typical mine experience … nonetheless it was a very interesting excursion… it was informative and fun to dig for amethysts. Utsi is an excellent guide .. prompt, friendly, and very knowledgeable… he showed us a lot of things along the way and explained a lot about life in the Lapland.

Very bad experience with this company with which we had booked 3 activities in advance on the internet. The first (visit to an amethyst mine) was simply canceled 2 hours before and we discovered it while reading our emails at breakfast while waiting for the pick. No explanation and no contact. When we contacted the agency by telephone, then at their office, the manager, who is a dishonest person, simply told us that the guide was sick and that he could not do anything for us (which seems to be repeated very often in reading the comments). When we insisted on knowing if we were the only customers disappointed with the management of this situation, he kindly made us understand that we were the only customers scheduled that day and that the activity was not profitable for him. He did not apologize but offered a full refund which was the least he could do.

We had a great trip to the Amethyst Mine. Our guide, Irina was amazing, very friendly and reliable. After the visit at the mine we had a nice barbecue at one of the typical finnish lavvu in front of a beautiful lake. Would highly recommend :)

We had a wet day. So didn't really do any walks. The mine was exactly as expected. Make sure to grab a pulla and coffee from the Cafe. The lunch provided was very good. And our guide had great stories and very willing to take group photos. They even provided chicken nuggets for the picky eaters.

With our grandchildren , their parents and other grandparents we went 120 km north of Rovaniemi to be tempted by the visit of the amethyst mine in northern Finland . It should be noted without further delay that the main interest of this day is the total change of scenery that it gives you...first the road lined with large snow-covered fir trees to a snow-cleared parking lot where you will be waiting for the driver of a tracked machine towing a second vehicle allowing a good dozen people to climb through splendid snowy landscapes to a first warm site where you can buy local souvenirs and eat with a hot drink if you wish. Then the tracked vehicle leaves for the mine even further. In the middle of a frozen and white setting, we take you to a mine museum where your guide explains the history of the mine exclusively in English (not a single word of French when we were all French). You can also see and touch stones extracted from the ground. Then we take you to the entrance of the mine where you descend several dozen wooden steps. Arrived in a covered room we give you a metal scraper of about twenty cm... and we tell you to scrape the stony floor to hope to find something...for about fifteen minutes...needless to say that you find only very small things ' to eight people we collected less than a dozen shards of amethysts of a length of a few millimeters! If, fortunately, you find a large stone, you have to declare it and pay it to take it with you in addition to the entrance price... Then you go up to be taken to the shop where you are offered amethysts for money. Finally we'll take you back to the original parking lot. In total the children are delighted to play explorers and you are happy for that. Only the memory of the tracked ride in a beautiful snowy setting will remain. .

We had a very nice day with our guide with laughs and interesting stories. The entry time to the mine was in the afternoon, so we had plenty of time to enjoy the surrounding nature and make a campfire for our lunch break. In the mine we could dig for our own stones and take several ones home.

Extraordinary for the frame especially The explanations and the experience in the mine are a plus but the snowy landscape is the greatest interest of this outing (for us in snowmobile but possible in knuckles) If you come out of the mine when the sun starts to set (for us around 4pm) prepare for a panorama is FANTASTIC

It's been an interesting trip! The tour guide was very nice and professional and would go to the place where we ate early to help us prepare food when there were few people. Barbecue technology is also good, we will be with you when digging and will give us advice.
