Take a morning to learn the Maya art of backstrap weaving in a beautiful central Antigua courtyard, surrounded by plants. Sit alongside a master weaver and learn her story.
Guatemala is a country rich in its textile tradition, with lots of colors everywhere. But do you know what it really takes to create a weaving? Beginners can gain appreciation of this tradition, and advanced weavers can dive into the nitty gritty details of single-sided or even double-sided brocade. Stitch by stitch, learn to weave a traditional motif.
Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller

You'll sit in our lush open courtyard and learn how to weave on a traditional backstrap loom. Our master weaver instructors will guide you step-by-step. Beginner weavers to advanced weavers, everyone welcome! Start with the most basic plain weave, or advance to brocade right away. One-on-one sessions allow you to advance as fast or as slow as you'd like. Your instructor will first demonstrate, and then sit beside you to guide you along. We have looms for you to use for free during class, and looms available for purchase that you can take home.

What a wonderful experience! Everyone at Kakaw Designs was so friendly and welcoming! The space is beautiful and I got to weave in the gorgeous garden for two hours. My Instructor Melanie was so informative and patient, we got a lot done in two hours (with a break including a delicious banana bread) Highly recommend if you're interested in learning abut the local craft and beautiful culture.

This group was AMAZING! The workshop was above and beyond what I was hoping for, with 1 on 1 attention and instruction from my teacher, Melany. She was so patient and helpful and I was able to complete my project in the two hour time frame with her assistance and encouragement. This group is so local and authentic and when I return to Antigua I look forward to doing another workshop they offer.

I think having some minimal experience kind of helped. The two hours was enough to understand the process. Every one, especially my teacher Melany, were very kind, informative and patient. I will visit again the next time I am in Antiqua.

This was a true highlight of my trip. It was a delightful 2 hours of one on one instruction. The class is given in a beautiful garden. Midway, you stop and have cocoa tea. A true momment of connection. I will treasure this experience always.

The highlight of my trip to Antigua. I have been to Antigua many times and wish I had learned about this hidden gem years ago. Thank you to Melanie and Susy for your patience, kindness, and knowledge. A memory I will never forget. Thank you!

I had the most incredible experience - learning so weave from the incredible women who work at Kakaw. They were patient and inspiring teachers - from helping with colour choice to set up my loom to teaching me how to include motifs in the design, and even how to count in Spanish. The setting is delightful - a tranquil peaceful garden courtyard and the team who work at kakaw made me feel so welcome. I wish I didn’t live as far away as I do - I would go back often! If you have even the smallest interest in weaving or textiles sign up for a course with Kakaw - you won’t be sorry!

This was an amazing experience. Being able to have a 1:1 instructor was lovely and Eve was so kind and patient and full of knowledge! She helped me with my Spanish as well as my weaving. And the shop afterwards where you can buy things knowing who made them was just fantastic. 100% recommend if you’re visiting Antigua and want an enriching cultural experience
