We wish to share these several beautiful caves (100%natural - difficult level) not open to the public.
Because the caves it`s in the nature and some with small areas, and we need to cross some farm fields, we recommend: Hiking boots * Pants and Rain jacket
God balance and flexibility
Algar do Carvão Will be closed from 20th of October 2024 till 2026, for renovation.
The only 2 places that are open to public is Volcano Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal. This places are only open Fall/winter on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. In summer every day is open, also closed on expecial occasions as Christmas days or special date.

5.00Juca was outstanding. I suspect that my review will be very similar to others. He picked us up, very punctually- at our hotel and greeted us with a wonderful smile and strong handshake while courteously reminding us of proper footwear for the adventure. His car was very clean and he was very conscious of safety. In planning our tour it initially was for just caves only, but Juca was very accommodating and we pivoted into doing an island tour. We visited many wonderful places, including great vistas, mysterious caves and the inside of a volcano. Luck has it that Juca is a professional photographer and showed us some of his tips and tricks while providing a few gem pictures. Lunch was at Canetas. Be sure to follow his recommendations and try the french fries which were out of this world. Juca is perfect for this job as he is extremely informative and pleasantly friendly. My wife and I have tremendous memories of the island and he made things so much better. It’s funny, we found ourselves mentioning his name when we were visiting other islands. That says a lot. 5.00This tour with Juca was one of the best things someone could do on the island. My wife and I had a long layover on the island so decided to book this tour. Juca showed us so much of the island, told us all about its history, showed us some of the most stunning geography we have ever seen, and on top of it all is amazingly funny and a professional photographer so he helped us get some of our favorite photos from our trip. He and his wife graciously took care of us while our flight was delayed and overall are fantastic human beings, if you’re reading this, book this trip now you won’t regret it!

5.00We had an amazing day with Juca - mostly underground - on the island of Terceira. Juca has a ton of knowledge about the incredible, wondrous and fragile world underground, in caves and volcano’s. It really opened up our eyes to a mostly unknown world that is vital to the health of our planet. The trip was an adventure for sure - finding our way through caves that are not open to the public was an unreal experience. Juca does not only have a lot of geological knowledge, he is a gifted guide and made us feel safe during our entire expedition through sometimes narrow passage ways and over slippery rocks. We had a ton of fun, unexpected encounters with cows and descended into holes the ground in the middle of misty fields. After a great proper Portuguese lunch we went to the more commercial sites and the contrast could not have been bigger! Ending in the volcano was spectaculair. Juca is also a gifted photographer and he not only took some amazing pictures of us, he also taught us a trick or two about light and composition. All in all - a day not to be missed and definitely never to be forgotten!

5.00I booked the all day cave tour. I only had one full day in Terceira. When Juca picked me up he asked if I wanted to do all day of caves or if I wanted to see more of the island. I chose to see more of the island. Juca and his wife operate the company and are very quick and responsive in inquiries. Juca does every tour and he is an awesome photographer who will take you to off the beaten path spots, along with popular spots at the right time to avoid crowds. I highly recommend this tour. If you are visiting the island for more than one day, book a multi day tour with them. I will be back some day and will spend several days with Azores Expeditions Thank you for an an amazing visit Azores Expeditions.

5.00We enjoyed the underground and photo tours; the service was perfect and excellent!! Juca is friendly, and he has incredible knowledge about each fantastic place. He knows the places perfectly and explains each detail to be safe, enjoy nature, and take amazing photos. We can appreciate nature very well; Terceira is the most beautiful and unreal place.

5.00We visited Terceira in October 2023 and did the Underground Expedition with Juca. It was an incredible experience for us! Besides visiting a cave and a volcano, we also went into a cave not open to the public. Juca took as to a traditional Azorean restaurant, where we had a great lunch and met very friendly locals. Juca is very passionate in his profession and he has a great humor. We could learn a lot about the history and the geology of caves and volcanoes and also about Terceira and the locals from him. Thank you for this unforgetable experience! :) When we visit Terceira again, we will definitely do the other Tours with Juca. Simon & Daniela

5.00Our family had an incredible tour with Juca! He has tremendous knowledge, enthusiasm, generosity and is a truly gifted photographer. The private tour surpassed our expectations - allowing us to experience private caves and other parts of the island we wouldn't have seen otherwise. And we had one of our best meals on the island. 5.00Taking this your was the highlight of our trip across the Azores. Juca is passionate about the island, knows a ton about the geology of the area, and knows the best spots. You’d think this was a photography course and tour in one! We chose this as it was private, comprehensive, and hit the off-the-path spots. The place he chose for lunch was also a trip highlight - by far the best lunch we had all week. We had a lovely time, 50+ pictures gorgeous pictures, a fully belly, and a new friend! Can’t recommend this enough! Thank you Juca!

5.00That was an amazing experience! Juca was not only knowledgable while speaking about Azores, but also full of knowledge in biology, nature, geology. He has an amazing personality and I always felt safe while we were exploring publicly unavailable caves. Tour has started with caves exploration, then followed by visiting "must to see" spots and of course volcano. Juca knew what time is the best for visit, as we had entire volcano for ourselves only. The bonus, he is professional photographer and managed (I am the one who likes to stay behind the scene) to take wonderful pictures of me, and gave some tips and tricks on phone photography as well on drone photography (wonderful bonus)! Next time I am in Terceira, I am booking tour again! P.S. Lunch was amazing in a place Juca booked. So definitely you won't starve :)
