Srebrenica
Visiting this small, historically rich, ‘silver town’ (Bosnian for silver is ‘Srebro’) will give better insight in the meaning of the “Worlds largest concentration camp during the 90’s”. Short walking tour for interesting photography and understanding what Srebrenica as small town really is. The most important highlight of the day is lunch with the local family in Srebrenica. As the unemployment rate, Genocide denial and severe discrimination of predominantly Bosniak people in Srebrenica is frequent, Funky Tours has dedicated its work to empower local communities to be active participant of sustainable tourism. People of Srebrenica love to share their personal stories, those beautiful ones, equally as the terrible ones. Don’t be afraid to listen, understand and actively support the sustainability of life in Srebrenica today. Food is homemade with vegetarian options. Taste is totally beyond your imagination.

So it feels odd to rate an experience like this, as the subject matter is the very opposite of fun and it shouldn't be an enjoyable experience. But: for anyone visiting Bosnia, I would 100% recommend spending a day doing this tour. The Srebrenica massacre is increasingly forgotten outside Bosnia, and it stands as one of the most important events in the last fifty years of Europe's history. The Funky Tours team has put together a brilliant programme for engaging with this difficult and sensitive topic, with two things that make it stand out in particular. First, is the guide. I cannot obviously guarantee you will get the same person, but I would strongly recommend trying to get Adnan as your guide. He was an officer in the Bosnian Army during the war, so he has a powerfully unique perspective on the subject. But he also has an excellent knowledge of Bosnia's history in the round, and how that shaped events, and a brilliant way of explaining it in an engaging way. This is partly thanks to this personal commitment to ensuring that the events at Srebrenica are not forgotten. But even though he has that personal connection, he is even-handed in his treatment of the subject matter, while not avoiding the responsibility of those who were in charge. Second, is the lunch. Rather than going to a restaurant, you have lunch with a local Bosnian Muslim family in the area. What could have been a tremendously awkward experience was fantastic: the food was brilliant, but even more importantly the people themselves are warm, friendly and open. The connection comes through Adnan's work after the war supporting families who wanted to return to the area, and it provides them with some income in what is a very difficult economic situation. Having that human connection helps to balance and contextualise what is otherwise a very challenging day. I can't praise Funky Tours for this programme enough.

Such a powerful experience. Elma, our guide is a Muslim from Eastern Bosnia, and had so much personal testimony that supported the horrors of the memorial centre. Thoroughly recommended.

This review is long overdue. Funky Tours is a catchy but misleading name. The company is absolutely not funky. Rather, it is a service and client-oriented top rate travel agency that cares about the needs and goals of its clients. My husband I learned so much from their knowledgeable guides multiple private tours from Ljubljana through Croatia to Sarajevo, Mostar and numerous area sites. We could write a treatise on all we learned about the history and wars of the Balkans, including political and religious perspectives. We were very pleased with the planning service, guides, and the warm friendliness offered by Ema and company. I wish we could return. I highly recommend this agency.

Almir was an amazing guide on our Srebrenica tour in February. He was a great guide and embodies a type of kindness that can be found in the Balkans. Everything in the tour was smooth and thought provoking as we went to learn more about one of the darkest chapters in European history. I would highly recommend this tour and Almir, in particular.

Todays tour with Adnan was outstanding, I have never come across a more genuine tour guide. His caring attitude, excellent storytelling skills and his mission to make visitors really understand the troubled and complex history is unique. I will remember this very special and intensive day, Friedbert

This tour was phenomenal. Almir was a great guide and gave me a thorough rundown of the history that led up to the genocide at Srebrenica and made sure to show me the often-forgotten places that told Srebrenica's story as we passed through them. When we got to the memorial center, he gave me ample time to explore the incredibly detailed and thoughtful museum while also offering a first-hand view on what the war was like. I really appreciated the depth of personal stories that he was willing to share with me and felt honored that I could learn about this tragedy from such a remarkable man. The memorial center itself was emotional and very well done. Visiting locals was another highlight of this trip. The family who hosted me were kind and welcoming, and they made me feel right at home. I highly recommend this tour--and Funky Tours in general--if you want to have a deeper understanding of the Bosnian genocide and a more complete picture of this beautiful country.

Thank you for your kindly guide, I had a fantastic experience in this tour. Although this tour is not for fun, I learn the important things as a human. In addition, the contact before and after my joining, your kindly response was so nice.

An interesting and unforgettable, if not sad, day trip with Adnan. With his past experience in the army he beautifully conveyed the struggles and horrors of Srebrenica, complex politics and mismanagement of the situation. A trip that you will never forget and you will love Bosnia even more for it. All this topped with a delicious and welcoming lunch. A must excursion to understand Bosnia.
