While having an escort from the train station to the palace was convenient, and our actual tour guide did a great job showing us some of the main highlights while in the palace, I cannot recommend this tour for a few reasons I'll explain. First off, it is important to understand that the palace itself and the gardens operate separately with their own ticketing and entrances/exits. Our tour started in the gardens, but there was some sort of mix up with the group tickets (apparently purchased for the wrong day by the operator of the tour), so they had to repurchase tickets for us to get us through which caused a bit of a delay. Subsequently our time through the gardens felt very rushed, and we missed some of the fountains' show times because of it. However, we were assured we could go back through the gardens at our own pace after the conclusion of the tour. So we exited the gardens and then toured the palace itself which was crowded but fine, and the tour ended after that. So afterwards my husband and I went back to explore the gardens some more, but we were stopped by the gate agents who would not let us through without our original ticket- we explained we didn't have the physical ticket because we went with a tour guide who had the actual tickets. The gate agent informed us that each ticket can be scanned twice for the day (to allow people to exit and reenter just like we were trying to do) but not without the actual ticket. So we reached out to the tour operator for them the send us the tickets so we could get back through, and the response we eventually got was "Dear guests we can only take you once inside the gardens - Our tickets can only be scanned once". Well the gate agents already told us we could get back through with it, plus the tour guide himself told us we could have more time on our own later, so we know that was a lie. It made us think, do they reuse the tickets to get a later group of tourists through? Very suspicious. Anyways we ended up having to pay out of pocket for new tickets to get back through the gardens. We are glad we did because it made us realize we missed out on SO much that we didn't see the first time through with the guide, but the whole ordeal had already tainted the experience. I wouldn't recommend wasting money on this tour- go on your own and that way you can go at your own pace.

This was a very nice way to visit Versailles. The train ride there was easy to navigate thanks to our guide. Mathieu, our guide at Versailles, was great. He was patient with those of us who needed a bit extra time for stairs and walking. He was very knowledgeable about the building itself but also about royal life at that time and the history of that era and presented it in an approachable, casual way. We really enjoyed our tour with him. Would highly recommend.
