Unexpected. You show up to a small town to a series of small, unassuming buildings and you expected the experience to be a disappointment. Then you walk in. It is incredibly well maintained, tastefully decorated, and the owner is incredibly welcoming. You descend a few flights of stairs and the next thing you know you are in the Barrel room — both the winery and the barrel room date from the 18th century. You enjoy the chill and the information. Pop goes a barrel and you taste a sample of a small production. Limited quantities. It whets your appetite for more. Next stop is the Vinoteca with samples of other small productions and nibbles of homemade appies. The proprietor is a wealth of knowledge, is extremely welcoming, and graciously welcomes you into the experience that is La Bodega.

This was a personalized tour for four of us by Jose at the Bodega del Tesoro. We met him at the property (parking is a few steps away on a small cinder lot) for his detailed and in depth knowledge of the wine industry of the region and especially about the competition, terroir, changing habits and the business of wine. We watched a couple of short narrated movies and he showed us around his restored winery and caves that go into the hillside opposite. We enjoyed three wines, and some delicious hot and cold food on the patio of his amazing bar. This was an excellent experience, worth the money and we came away from this visit with a better understanding of the importance of wine from this region.
