Perched high upon a cliff, rising 900m above the Zeta valley stands Ostrog, the most important site in Montenegro for Orthodox Christians, attracting up to a million visitors annually. This religious attraction is not without its fair share of legends and stories. The monastery has been carved almost entirely on an impossibly vertically positioned mountain cliff and is the pride of Montenegrin spirituality. Constructed in 1665 within two large caves, it gives the impression that it has grown out of the very rock. On Ostrog monastery tour, you will hear many stories and legends about how it was built, about the monks who reside here and above all, you will hear about St Basil – the miracle worker, whose bones were laid to rest in the Upper Monastery. Another highlight of this trip is that you will visit a local household that reflects how old Montenegro is kept alive in modern days. Enjoy in traditional Montenegrin treats prepared by the local hosts.

Ostrog Monastery
When we arrive at the Monastery Ostrog complex, we will first visit the Lower Monastery and the Holy Trinity Church from 1824. Then we will take off to the Upper Monastery. Bear in mind that we will need to park the car and walk up hill for 5 minutes to the Upper Monastery. When we arrive at the Upper Monastery you will hear many stories and see the coffin with the remains of St Basil, most important saint of Montenegro Orthodoxy.
Rural household visit and lunch. You will sample different kinds of homemade products specially prepared by our hosts like three different kinds of fruit brandy (‘Rakija’, as we call it), honey, specialities of meat, juices and cheese all prepared in the traditional Montenegrin way. You will feel good known Montenegrin hospitality on the every step of the tour. You will see the interiors of an old Montenegrin home and learn about how food was prepared and preserved during the winters. Our host will also show you how he makes honey and if you like he will give you a protection suit and hat and explain to you how the bee community functions. In spring and summer the colors are impressive as our host has more than 30 trees of different kinds of fruit.

A place of ultimate cult for Orthodox Church. Impressive. Located and carved in the mountain rock 2000m above the sea level. Difficult access, maybe on purpose, but worth seeing. Restricted entrance by car, but i was permitted to enter. Kind an polite security, but at sam time very attentive. Very different, very interesting, original in its specific ceremony. Recommended strict following of the rules and protocol. Due to the respect above all. Also, haevy and attent security on place. Stunning view on sunset.
