Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja
National Park Hike With our bilingual naturalist guide, you'll walk 3.5-km (2 miles) in Las Pailas circular path through the tropical forest to enjoy the best views of the volcano, incredible nature, volcanic activity, and wildlife. The park is home to more than 300 species of birds, and many other animals, such as armadillos, bays, iguanas, coatis and white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, turkeys, and much more. You will stop to view the volcanic activity including bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and a mini crater. The Las Pailas sector spectacularly shows the power of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, the most active and largest volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Steam and sulfur come from natural fumaroles of the yellow and rusty soil. Witness clay pails in various shades of brown with boiling volcanic water, fine gray volcanic mud bubbles and explosions in large pails. This volcano is like no other in Costa Rica.
Oropendola Warterfall
After the hike, take a short walk off the beaten path to Oropendola Waterfall just outside of the park, where you can jump in and swim in the blue lagoon.

This was an incredible experience! We started with the volcano hike. On the hike we saw fumaroles, mud pots, a beautiful waterfall, many spider monkeys, various iguanas, and snakes including a boa. And got a stunning view of the volcano. The Oropendola Waterfall swimming is amazing! After our delicious traditional lunch we enjoyed the hot springs and mud bath in a beautiful setting. Our guide Dafne connected with us and made the whole day even more fun! She knows the area well and is a wealth of information. Danny, our driver, was safe and conscientious on the road. One of our best travel days ever!

This Rincón de la Vieja volcano hike, waterfall swim, and hot springs tour was well organized and led by an excellent guide. JC was very knowledgeable and personable, sharing insights about the rainforest, wildlife, and volcanic landscape along the hike. The walk itself is quite manageable, we’re in our late 50s and in ok physical shape, and had no issues. While the hike and scenery were interesting, the experience felt more relaxed than adventurous, and the pace was a bit slow at times. We didn’t see any sloths, and there was some waiting around, including about 30 minutes after pickup while the guides had breakfast. The hot springs, mud baths, and waterfall swim were the clear highlights and absolutely worth it. I highly recommend bringing water shoes, as the rocky bottoms make walking barefoot difficult. Overall, this is a good tour, especially if you’re looking for an easy hike and a laid-back, educational experience. If you want more adventure, you may want to choose a more active tour.

The staff are attentive to your needs. The experience is located at the Rincon volcano. This group does a nice job of organizing the activities. Note that it is a shared experience and because of such, at least an hour to an hour and a half of your time is spent Picking up other passengers for transportation. Regardless, the remainder of the trip is very similar to a private experience since the number of participants are limited.

This was a very well run adventure with a pleasant guide and driver. There was a total of three stops and a buffet lunch was included. The tour group will likely be mixed company, some younger folks and some older, so it makes for a leisurely stroll around the scenery of the volcano park. The waterfall is nice for viewing a taking a dip in colder water and then there is the hot springs. I stayed at Hotel Boyeros and pick up was at the supermarket across the street. This was the final pickup on the tour (Liberia) and was on time at 830 am. We were also the first to be dropped off after the tour, so it made for a nice trip. Some folks on the tour were picked up 630am - so they had a 2.5 hour bus ride to the attractions and 2.5 hours back to their hotels.
