Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja
National Park Hike With our bilingual naturalist guide, you'll walk 3.5-km (2 miles) in Las Pailas circular path through the tropical forest to enjoy the best views of the volcano, incredible nature, volcanic activity, and wildlife. The park is home to more than 300 species of birds, and many other animals, such as armadillos, bays, iguanas, coatis and white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, turkeys, and much more. You will stop to view the volcanic activity including bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and a mini crater. The Las Pailas sector spectacularly shows the power of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, the most active and largest volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Steam and sulfur come from natural fumaroles of the yellow and rusty soil. Witness clay pails in various shades of brown with boiling volcanic water, fine gray volcanic mud bubbles and explosions in large pails. This volcano is like no other in Costa Rica.
Oropendola Warterfall
After the hike, take a short walk off the beaten path to Oropendola Waterfall just outside of the park, where you can jump in and swim in the blue lagoon.

Great tour. The driver was on time and the small group made it personal. The guide knew everything about the park and even showed us the root-beer plant. The hike was beautiful and we saw capuchin and spider monkeys. The waterfall was amazing, though water shoes would help because the rocks are sharp. Hot springs were incredible and the lunch was excellent. Highly recommend

lots of up and down steps, walking on shaky plank bridge over water, make sure to bring bug spray. but wonderful experience.

Although we were not able to swim in the waterfall (rain season), the rest of the activities were great! Beautiful views and trees during hiking and fun chilling time in the hot springs. Our guide Julio was amazing and super funny!

The hike, landscape, and hot springs were amazing. Well worth the trip! JC was a fun guide and very knowledgeable. The day lasted 12 hours from pick up to drop off, so expect a long day. We would absolutely do this tour again and the communication with the company was stellar.

Day was perfectly paced. Not too long a drive, good buffet lunch, 2 hr hike, suspension bridges, waterfall, hot springs. Perfect honeymoon activity for a bit of adventure.

They picked us up and we drove to meet others and were able to grab an optional Costa Rican breakfast while we waited. Drove to an area where we were able to throw suits on if we wanted and were able to use bug spray and sunscreen. Drove a couple more minutes where we started our hike which was incredibly informative! Learned about different plants, culture of the witches, the volcano, Nature, and more. Went to the waterfall where we crossed a huge hanging bridge and had time to take photos and swim. After the waterfall we went and enjoyed an amazing Costa Rican buffet lunch. Then headed to the hot springs where there are different pools with different temps. They had mud that a guy would give you in a shell to spread all over and it really helps with body aches dues to all the minerals. From there we packed up and drove to a cute souvenir shop. Our tour guide was Kevin and he was absolutely fun and amazing. He made the tour what it was, he was very patient with all the questions and shenanigans.

Oh my goodness i would say 100 out of 10. This tour is soooooo cool I highly recommend you do it. Worth every penny. I have seen pictures of this tour but does not compare living it in person. The food at lunch was amazing yummy and restaurant so pretty. Overall a great fun adventure will definitely do it again.

I did the Rincon de la Vieja excursion with Native’s Way on October 18, 2025, and it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish! Our tour guide Kevin was absolutely fantastic—super knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. He shared so much about the local nature, wildlife, and Costa Rican culture, and made sure everyone in the group felt comfortable and included. The day was packed with adventure — a beautiful volcano hike, a refreshing swim under a waterfall, and then the perfect way to unwind in the hot springs surrounded by nature. Everything was well-organized and ran smoothly thanks to Kevin and our excellent driver Frank, who kept us safe and on schedule. We finished the day with a delicious lunch that really hit the spot after all the activities. I can’t recommend this tour enough if you’re visiting Guanacaste — it’s the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and Costa Rican beauty.

We spend our Costa Rica holiday during the low season, so there were some difficulties with booking the tour, as it was not easy to reach the minimum number of participants required (four). However, the Native's Way staff did their best to overcome this difficulty and schedule the participants properly so that the trip could take place. The tour started with Rincón de la Vieja hike. Our guide and driver (2 in 1) Harry showed himself to be a competent, educated and patient guy who introduced us to the most interesting places where we could observe volcanic activity (fumaroles, mud pools, boiling water), as well as interesting plants and animals of the both dry and rain tropical forests. Then we continued to the Oropendola waterfall, where we could take a bath, but beware: the water is rather cold. However, we still enjoyed it After the very tasty buffet-style lunch (chicken was outstanding) we went to the Rio Negro hotsprings, which was the last activity. Unfortunately rain started, which was a bit annoying, but we still had fun. Actually, much more time could be spent at this place, but you need to follow the schedule. It should be emphasized that there are very comfortable changing rooms and lockers near the hot springs and a dry towel is provided here. We strongly recommend to wear aqua socks to Oropendola and hot springs, as especially people with sensitive feet may struggle with the rocky bottom of the Oropendola lagoon and the paths between the hot pools.
