  • One of the best nights of my life

I went on a Northern Night tour with Karim and the night couldn't have been any better. It was an 8 person group and I was travelling on my own, but the group atmosphere was warm and chatty. First of all, my tour was booked for Saturday night, and two days before Karim wrote to me to offer me to change the date to Friday, as both the weather and the aurora chances were going to be better. I luckily was able to change it and the night started with some huge auroras just as we were driving out of Tromso. Karim knew of a spot with less light pollution along the way and we could enjoy the lights for quite some time. Karim took photos of all of us with her camera (thank you!) and we explored the area as the lights were changing locations. It was great. Once the lights were dimmer we headed towards Hillesøy, where Karim had booked a cabin for us to get warm and have dinner. She told us that depending on the weather forecast she either goes to her own cabin or rents one (she has a couple different locations). We were able to see the lights once again when we arrived and she was checking for them throughout the way too, just in case they got stronger so we would stop. The cabin was very cozy. She lit a fire that quickly made the place warm and she took a big variety of food out for dinner: sausages, cheese, sauces, home made jam, marshmallows, etc. There was plenty of food for all of us. She even brought home made wine, it was delicious! Besides, I asked her a couple weeks before the tour about the availability of gluten free food in case I had to bring gluten free bread (I'm a gluten intolerant) and she told me she'd buy the bread herself, which I highly appreciated. During this time we went out of the cabin a couple times to see if the lights had came out again, which they did but in a fainter way. The strongest ones were the first ones. After having dinner and since the sky got cloudy, we headed back to Tromso and she left each of us at our accommodation (another guest and I were in Tromsdalen and she even took us all the way there). All in all, this tour offered me one of the best nights of my life. I'm so glad I decided to take this instead of a bigger bus tour, as the van could go to places where buses can't and as the atmosphere and the dinner made the whole night even more worth it. Thank you, Karim! Tusen takk!

It was amazing. Karen was a very nice guide and host and the tour was kind di personalized in the sense that whenever we used to see aurora, she would herself stop the minivan so that we all could enjoy. Lovely cabin also :)

Wonderful experience very Well organized. Small and confortable minibus for maximum 8 people (we were 4). It is one of the few tour that starts at 8pm and this is a plus because it permits to have more time during the day to make other experiences. Another big plus is the availability of a typical norwegian cabin where we have stopped in the middle of the tour. It is a heated cabin where the guide has offered us hot dogs, snacks and hot drinks. You can go in&out the cabin, trying to see the northern lights without freezing. And finally the guide, Oscar, super kind and available for all our request. He has done professional photos during the night of northern lights and then the day after he has send them by mail to each of us! Very reccomended tour!

Karin was very friendly and optimistic and, being local, very knowledgeable about the area. We even started the trip an hour early to try and catch the lights since clouds were starting to roll in. It was cool going out onto the farther islands away from the city and the silence and just lack of noise out there is something special. We didn't go out on a good night (weak aurora activity and lots of clouds which isn't Karin's fault at all) but she did stop by the side of the road and we did technically see the lights, but it was just a faint line nearly invisible to the naked eye but all the groups got pictures. The lights only lasted maybe 10 minutes but we still spent something like an hour just standing on the roadside looking at nothing when it was getting cloudier and obviously nothing was going to happen again. Karin was taking pictures, but they really weren't worth standing around for. We weren't at a beauty spot, so the pictures are either just empty sky or the van on the side of the road. We eventually ended up going to a cabin for food but it wasn't Karin's. At the beginning of the trip she mentioned that her cabin was at a place with full cloud coverage so she found another one. We appreciated that, but it meant the cabin we used was just in some random persons backyard. Karin mentioned her cabin was bigger and the one we were in probably wasn't made to comfortably fit nine people so it was a tight squeeze and, since this seemed last minute, we didn't have plates to eat on. This cabin, unlike hers, also didn't have a bathroom. Men were told to urinate behind the cabin in the pitch black on a snowy incline. There was a portable toilet for women but it was frozen and inside a storage shed full of stuff and not much more comfortable than just dropping your pants in a bush. My boyfriend and I appreciate that Karin tried but it just felt like we didn't get nearly as good an experience as other reviewers did and, honestly, we didn't really have much fun or felt that we got our moneys worth. It felt like a pretty slapped together experience. I think if you get lucky with the lights OR you have a great cabin experience this tour is worth it but we didn't really have either. Even if you don't see the lights other tours might bring you someplace pretty or make you feel like you're having an adventure. All we really got was standing on the side of road and my boyfriend nearly falling over trying to pee in the snow.

Had the moat wonderful experience with Karin and Oliver. Both were incredibly welcoming, responsive and went above and beyond to ensure we see the northern lights. The smallest details like preparing food and snacks in her cabin is 5 star and more. Thank you again Karin for making this activity pleasant. Cheers to Skadi Adventures!!!
