What To Expect
Join us for a winter taster day to help build the knowledge required for safe and efficient winter hill walking or just choose to be guided on this private winter event. The course aim will be to give you an overview of the skills and considerations required to head out safely on the hill in winter. It will be coached in the context of a mountain journey and topics covered will be dependent on weather and underfoot conditions. Prerequisites: This course is directed to those looking for an introduction to winter. Ideally you should have summer hill walking experience. Walking in winter requires a good level of fitness. What we will aim cover depending on conditions: - Choosing the right kit for winter - Personal movement skills on snow - Use of crampons and ice axe - Winter navigation techniques - Avalanche awareness, safe route planning - Emergency procedures

Learning to Navigate at Night

5.00It was great to learn to navigate without being able to see very much. The discipline of breaking the route down into small legs and really looking at the detail of what was in it was really good experience. The instruction was put across in a very accessible way.

5.00A professional and hugely enjoyable experience from enquiry to end. Despite being given short notice, Hillgoers ensured we had an excellent guide, clear advice on preparations and friendly contacts throughout. Bill met us near our accommodation, indeed at our door on day two, shared his outstanding winter walking knowledge and entertaining chat whilst keeping us on schedule to complete in daylight. The two days offered different weather conditions and opportunities to demonstrate deeper mountain walking knowledge as well as providing two very different routes. We would definitely recommend and not hesitate to book again given the opportunity

5.00Really enjoyable trip up Lochnagar in winter conditions guided by Hillgoers, great group and fantastic leader (Edd!). I usually do 1 or 2 guided walks a year with Hillgoers , these have included Navigation and winter skills and I always feel they are great value for money. They are my first choice for a guided walk.
