I’ve traveled a fair bit and taken many food tours, but this one was something else. Hans is an absolute gentleman—warm, friendly, very funny, and his English is perfect. He won’t take you anywhere on the usual tourist trail. Yes, you’ll try the beer fish, but more importantly, you’ll experience what the locals really eat. We visited a humble stall with the freshest, most delicious local vegetables, toured the only local market where Hans explained every local product and answered all our questions (with samples of locally brewed rice wine!), and tried snail broth noodles—a Yangshuo specialty. The touristy versions don’t compare; this was my favorite meal of the entire trip. We also ventured out into the sticks for incredible fried noodles and a local dessert, then finished at another local favorite for chicken and fried rice. What made this tour special—aside from learning what’s a tourist trap versus what locals truly eat—was Hans himself. Well-traveled, articulate, and genuinely thoughtful, he creates a judgment-free space where he’s as interested in your story as he is in sharing his own. I made the most of every second in China, but this was my highlight by a mile!
