We chose to venture inland to relatively un-touristy Dak Lak and Buon Ma Thout. It was really the highlight of our three weeks in Vietnam. A one-hour drive from The Lake Farm (who organized our visit) to Yok Don was rewarded with a fabulous experience of walking to and hanging out with two elephants in the wild. Our guide explained that these are rescue elephants that have been removed to Yok Don. There are wild elephants as well but those are further afield and not visited. It was a hands-off, at a distance experience, but close enough to be able to see their behavior, food choices, bonding with their elephants companion and mahout. Highly recommend! A real highlight of our trip to Vietnam! Dress like the guide and mahouts. Wear comfortable close-toe shoes, a hat, and loose-fitting breathable clothes. They provide a bottle of water with the tour.
