Bukit Lawang Jungle
Upon arrival at Kuala Namu International Airport, you will be met by your private driver who will accompany you the entire time in Sumatra. The drive to Bukit Lawang takes about 4 hours and takes you along rubber and palm oil plantations, lush jungle and mountain landscapes. You may stop along the way for photo stops or food breaks. Our driver will help you communicate with the locals.

Today we go on a 2-day jungle tour and with a bit of luck you may see orangutans in the wild. Our guides are licensed by the National Park Office and have years of experience in jungle trekking. There are two guides available for the day. You will be picked up from your accommodation at 9am and then you will go into the jungle together. The trek takes about 6h including breaks for photos and food. In the afternoon you will reach the camp near a river. You can jump into the water or just relax. Our cook prepares an Indonesian dinner for you (vegetarian options available). You sleep in a semi-open shelter, surrounded by the sounds of the river and the jungle.

After breakfast you will be picked up by our driver. The drive to Berastagi takes about 5 hours, depending on traffic. However, you can take breaks at your leisure. Upon arrival, you can visit a local market or relax.

Mount Sibayak
After a timely breakfast, you can climb the Sibayak volcano, or if you wish, visit the Hot Springs or the traditional village of Lingga.
Lake Toba
Then continue south to Lake Toba, the largest crater lake in the world. On the way you can stop for photo stops, e.g. at Sisipiso Waterfall, and breaks. The drive takes about 3 hours. You drive to the harbour, from where you take the car ferry to Tuktuk on Samosir Island. The crossing takes about 30 minutes. Afterwards you will go to the hotel. The evening is at your leisure.

Samosir Tourist Information Centre
After breakfast, explore Samosir Island and Lake Toba with your driver. You will drive to Ambarita, Samosir's most interesting village of the local Batak culture. From there you will continue to Simanindo, where you can see a performance of a traditional Batak dance. Afterwards, you will continue to a beautiful viewpoint from where you can look out over Samosir Island and Lake Toba.

5.00Our 7-day Sumatra private adventure with Discover Sumatra was truly unforgettable. From trekking through the jungle in Bukit Lawang and spotting so many orangutans in their natural habitat, to watching the sunrise over Lake Toba and hiking up Sibayak volcano — every day felt magical. The guides were incredible: friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what they do. Everything was so well organized and seamless that we could just relax and enjoy the experience. We left with amazing memories and a deep appreciation for this beautiful island. Couldn’t recommend Discover Sumatra more!

5.00From the airport pick-up to Medan back, everything was perfectly organized on our individually put together private tour: consistently super nice, very helpful and mega child-friendly drivers and guides who always took into account the changing and different needs of a family with 2 children! 5.00We had an unforgettable week in Sumatra, all thanks to Discover Sumatra’s amazing organisation. The two-day jungle trek in Bukit Lawang was challenging but incredibly rewarding — we saw many orangutans and monkeys, slept by the river, and swam in it too! The climb up Mount Sibayak at sunrise with Mel Gibson was another highlight (his pandan brownies and coffee made it extra special). We also loved our time at Lake Toba, getting to know the Batak people and their culture. Sharing an authentic Batak lunch with Eric and his family was a true highlight that gave us a real taste of local life. Huge thanks to all our incredible guides: the jungle team in Bukit Lawang, our safe and experienced driver Aries, brilliant Mel Gibson, and kind Eric on Samosir Island. Beautiful nature, genuine people, real adventure — we couldn’t have asked for more. Can't recommend it enough.

5.00The tour was an unforgettable experience and perfectly organized by Discover Sumatra. We had wonderful drivers and guides who accompanied us in the 6 days. We would book again anytime with Discover Sumatra and wish we could have spent more time on the island. Our highlights were definitely the jungle as well as Lake Toba. 5.00A journey that we will surely remember! The tour allowed us to get to know the many facets of Sumatra and the lives of the people there. Thanks to knowledgeable guides, we got an uncomplicated insight into how to make palm sugar, tempeh or rubber, prepared the typical Gado Gado salad ourselves, watched Utan mothers with their babies in the jungle orangutans, climbed the Sibayak volcano at dawn and prepared one of the well-known dishes on an open fire at home with a Batak woman on Samosir Island - ginger, turmeric and chili we got from the garden beforehand. We felt safe at all times. Everything went according to plan, which allowed enough freedom for spontaneous adjustments. All in all, we got a really great insight into the culture and life of the people on Sumatra - we were very close - that was very enriching.

5.00Wonderful experience in the north of Sumatra, thanks to the careful organisation of Discover Sumatra and to the enthusiasm and competence of the local guides. Great experience in the jungle, despite the rainy season (was raining only at night), exciting excursion to the volcano at sunrise, rest and discover of local culture at Samosir island. Good hotels and perfect transfers. Syaipul, Imran and Windy have been really great in helping us to discover this nice region.

5.00We visited Sumatra late October/beginning of November. It turned out that it was perfect time for us - less tourists on the trails - it was more private experience in the jungle. We were lucky to see Orangutans, Gibbons, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, Macaques- big thanks to our great guides Pele and Fabio :) The whole trip was very diverse super interesting and well organized. The volcano trekking was one the best experience and the Lake Toba - the stay at the Tabo Cottages was wonderful rest after very intense time. We higli recommend the trip if you would like to discover real Sumatra Kaja & Tomek
