Already from kilometers away, you can spot the castle, dominating the town’s skyline. Once built to ward off the Crusader armies at the key trade and pilgrimage intersection between Jerusalem, Cairo, Damascus and Mecca, it didn’t loose anything of it’s mighty presence until today. If you have energy left, you can optionally continue to Umm Qais at Jordan’s northern border. Besides the black basalt ruins of the former Decapolis city, also the views over the Sea of Galilee and towards Syria and Lebanon are quite impressive. Return to Amman in the evening. Especially the ‘Madaba Map’, the oldest preserved map of the Middle East, is totally worth the visit! Then drive on to Mt Nebo.
