• Fascinating views, a must do activity

  We were the first at the view point, other groups were later (and there were many people). There are only a few spots in the first row and you should be there if you want to take the perfect photos. It is gonna be freezing and you are going to stand there for 90 minutes. After that you are going to hike uphill to a volcanic crater. It is definitely worth it, just be ready for a miserable ride in an extremely uncomfortable 4×4 vehicle.

  Really awesome day, although very early start as we knew. Picked up around 12:45am and hit a lot of traffic on the way back (not their fault at all of course but keep in mind if that is a travel day for you!). Freezing * at the top since you arrive at least an hour before sunrise and wind is very cold, was like 40F and windy, but they have people who offer coat rentals for 20-30 thousand rupiah (like 1 USD) and I really recommend getting this. As someone from the north east America, I was cold! But the sunrise was gorgeous so I definitely recommend! Many other solo travelers as well so easy to meet people

  Our driver picked us up on time from our accommodation and we were at the meeting point where we joined other tours in good time, too early perhaps as there was a long wait before sunrise, but this is obviously to mitigate against any circumstances that may cause a late arrival. After sunrise the drive back to the sea of sand was long due to very bad traffic but the driver made a couple of stops for viewpoints which was appreciated. Free hot drink and banana at the cafe before sunrise was also a nice touch. The walk to Bromo across the sea of sand was not too difficult but a reasonable level of fitness is required. Bring a face mask as the sand/dust can make it hard to breathe. There are lots of locals asking if you would like to ride a horse up to the steps to the crater, please refuse this, the horses are clearly not kept in good conditions. The vehicle wasn't the most comfortable, even when on paved roads, but it's a price to pay for being able to navigate off road. Our driver was friendly enough despite his limited English, and we arrived back at our hotel on time. Don't expect anything too special, these tours run every day for thousands of tourists, but overall a good experience that we would recommend.

  Staff super nice, it was a great experience, with an amazing sunrise, worth the early start. Very cold. But the waterfall that was in the program didn't happen, after the volcano they drove us back to Malang dropping us at our hotel.

• Exotic and beautiful volcanos, but too crowded

  Our guide Andi and our driver were friendly, punctual, and professional. We got up to the viewing point in no time thanks to our skilled driver's ability to drive off-road in zero visibility fog. It was very crowded and busy with hundreds of other people gathered for the sunrise. From the viewing point, it's dark enough to see the Milky Way! We were lucky because the weather gave us clear skies for breathtaking views of Mt. Bromo along with picturesque low lying clouds surrounding the caldera. What I do want to point out, however, is the experience is very commercialized. It is peak season so there are many tourists. But it was sad to see how tourists, many who had just come from Bali, left piles of trash all over the national park. Mt. Bromo is a national treasure of Indonesia. It deserves more respect from it's visitors. Also, because of too many tourists who cannot be bothered to trek across the sand sea, vendors have brought horses to shuttle tourists to and from the base of the caldera. We witnessed these horses being abused, yelping in pain, and basically forced to carry tourists to the point of exhaustion. I'm thankful for our driver and guide and support local tour operators who have a business to run. But I really think Mt. Bromo has become a tourist trap and a lot of the problems with over-tourism in Bali is overflowing into Java now.
