  • You don't get what you paid for

The overall experience was mediocre. Mostly because of the fact that they cheated us. We were supposed to stay at Juma Lodge but on the day of the trip the guy (his name is Eduardo) who came to pick us up from our hotel told us that there was a problem with generator at Juma Lodge and we could not stay there. He offered us two options: a total refund or accomodation in Anaconda Lodge. We had no choice but to agree to a change, because we would not be able to find any other Amazon tour at such short notice. Unfortunately the place where we arrived looked way worse than this presented in the offer of Juma Lodge. The whole place looked unkempt, the swimming pool was filthy, the bedding in the rooms was torn. The food was monotonous and there was little choice. The staff was nice and helpful but unless you speak Portuguese or Spanish you won't be able to communicate with people working there. Our itinerary included pirania fishing and cayman watching which was pretty daunting since it lasted around 3 hours on the boat. We only enjoyed the jungle trekking. On our original way to the lodge we were supposed to see the meeting waters but since we were moved to a different lacation, we couldn't do that. Fortunately, after speaking to the staff about this, they eventually offered us a private boat tour to see the meeting waters on our way back. We read some reviews about the place and we found out that this is a common thing for this company to move their clients to different accomodations. Overall, after reading so many positive reviews of Juma Lodge we expected to spend a really wonderful time. Instead, we were stuck in a rundown place which is definitely not worth the money we paid for it.

I went for fishing, Caymon spotting in the night, jungle walk, saw some of the birds and animals during the boat ride and swimming in the river. But did not see pink dolphins as mentioned in the itinerary; I stayed in Ipanema lodge instead of Juma lake lodge. Food was good. Overall, it was a good experience and I really enjoyed it.

  • Okay, but room for improvement

The Amazon rainforest is an amazing place, but the tour could have been a lot better. Firstly, the pickup was highly disorganised. I was told to wait in the hotel lobby between 8-8.30am. Finally an everyday unmarked car came at 9.10am with 2 people who didn’t speak English, and told me to get in. This was a bit unnerving as a solo traveller as I had no idea where I was going or how long we would be driving for. The rest of the journey was slightly better as we met English-speaking guides at the port, who told us what to expect from them on. The lodge is nice, clean, very beautiful and comfortable. The food was okay but always the same - rice, spaghetti, beans, salad and meat/fish. Okay for a couple of days but not much fresh vegetables or variety in general. Often not enough was cooked either, especially when a large group arrived- you’d think they’d increase portions based on number of guests, but that didn’t really happen. The most disappointing part was that tour description said we would do an early morning bird watching tour and then a jungle trek, neither of which happened. We just did yet another boat trip and didn’t see much wildlife or learn about plants, animals or birds etc. as promised. Overall I saw sloths, monkeys, iguana, alligators and a few other birds- but I was hoping to see more and explore the jungle by foot, as I expected (everything was by boat). The staff were mostly friendly and welcoming and I enjoyed the trip overall, but it could have been significantly improved.
