Joal Fadiouth
Joal is the one located on the mainland, birthplace of the first president Léopold Senghor. Fadiouth is on a small island reached by a long wooden bridge entirely of shells: these shell middens are actually the remains of the molluscs eaten here by humans since ancient times and a quiet shell graveyard, which has been deposited over the centuries, hosting both Muslim and Christian tombs. It is possible to take the bridge but also to take a canoe to connect Joal to Fadiouth.
the artisanal port of Joal is considered the largest in Senegal a very active port wakes up at a time when the canoes return from work, women, men and children water sometimes up to the waist go, at the using baskets, basins, plastic buckets, fetch the fish to the pretty colorful canoes, receive the fish, sort them, empty them and lay them out on shelves or on the ground. Some categories will go in the refrigerated trucks parked at the quay to be transported to the cities of Senegal and in the sub-region. will be dried and then smoked for local consumption and that of neighboring countries.
the sacred baobab of the village of Fadial, is a mastodon, if we compare it to the other baobabs that grow in Senegal. It is the largest baobab in West Africa and measures more than 26m in circumference. according to the curator, the baobab is 850 years old, a hole of a small width of barely 50 centimeters allows access to the interior. If you have the courage, you can even go inside, but beware the opening is narrow. This tree has a special history, Its interior cavity served as a cemetery for the griots of the locality. When they died, they were mummified inside the baobab. For these populations who were animists at the time, the griots did not practice agriculture and burying them underground would make the land infertile. For several years, the griots had been hanging there. It was finally in 1960, says curator Massamba Sall, that this practice was banned. As the place is frequented by travelers, the baobab is surrounded by shops.

We had an amazing weekend! Amadou organized everything very well and we felt very welcomed. As it was a private tour we could even adjust it a bit to our needs which was great. It really felt like a local and authentic experience and can only recommend it!

Amadou was a fantastic tour guide. My family (husband and three sons ages 5-12) and I were traveling to Dakar for a wedding, but wanted to see more of Senegal while we there. Amadou picked us up from the airport when we arrived, took us on this tour and then dropped us off at our Airbnb in Dakar. Everything went so smoothly. Every detail seemed to be meticulously planned. Amadou was also very attentive to our interests and our kids' interests. He asked them right away what they were excited about. My oldest son said he hoped to see a monkey. As we were driving the first day, Amadou noticed a monkey on the side of the road and had the driver stop so we could get out and see it. It turned out to be a lot of monkeys and it made our kids' day. The accomodations were excellent, and the food was incredible. This was the kind of unique experience we never could have created for ourselves. I highly recommend it! One helpful thing to know is that this tour includes several local tour guides (all included in the cost of the tour), but it's good to have cash to be able to tip them if you want.

I can absolutely recommend this trip! It was a great way to experience the Saloum Delta and other places in the South of Senegal. I enjoyed all the activities included in this trip and I completely relaxed at the Nouvel Vague camp overlooking the lake, and during the lunch in nature. If you want to discover more of Senegal's beautiful culture and nature, then this is the tour package for you! Everything was arranged very well, we didn't have to worry about anything.

Thanks to Amadou for this exceptional weekend! Its program allowed us to discover the Saloum Delta well with lots of entertaining activities (carriage, lunch with your feet in the water, canoe, visit of a baobab, etc.). His good humor and kindness embellished the proposed circuit!

What a great tour of the Delta and Joal Fadiouth! Amadou was a real professional and looked after our group as if we were family. Speaking both French and English, Amadou looked after us every step of the way. From the trip on the piroques to the granaries, Shell island and Fadiouth; the horse and cart ride and stops at several local villages; a 're-birth' experience at one of the largest Boabab trees; 2 great nights accommodation with local food, all culminating in a boat trip and final barbecue lunch right in the river to the tune of african drums in the background. What can I say... give it a go!
