Palma de Mallorca
We will be able to visit the statue of Jafuda ben Cresques, a 14th century Jewish cartographer who made the world-famous Catalan Atlas map that Christopher Columbus might have used in his travels. We will walk down Leather Maker Street and learn about the old bakery named Can Miquel that up until recently was still in use and is known to be built on the site of the “sinagoga nova” or the “new synagogue.” We will look for signs and clues hidden within the walls and street names that reference a once prominent Jewish past. Together we will admire a mural that was recently painted during the pandemic highlighting a well-documented history of lust and conflict that took place between two Jews in the Tower of Love during the 1300s. We will also visit the site of the main synagogue where the Montesion Church now stands and walk down the Street of the Wind where you may find something surprising.

Shaul's breath or knowledge and enthusiasm made this tour an informative experience that also recreated the feelings that Jews living in Majorca experiences over centuries through their their resolve and often impossible plights. A highlight of our cruise port excursions and not to be missed. Shaul answered all our questions and provided visuals to enhance our walking tour of Jewish landmarks and neighborhoods.

I have not stopped talking about the Wonderful Jewish walking tour I had with Lovely Knowledgeable Cristina from Jewish Majorca two weeks ago. The founder of the company, Dani Rotstein, kept in contact with me before the tour to make sure that I had all the necessary contact information and after the tour for a sneak peek at the Incredible documentary he has put together about this Important history. The two hours with Cristina flew by while she painted a clear picture of the very sobering history of the Jewish people in general and specifically the story of the Mallorcan Conversos and Chuetas through the Middle Ages on this well-paced, organized, fascinating tour. I Love that despite the harrowing, horrifying history, there is now a Jewish presence in Mallorca today, more than 500 years post expulsion. Dani Rotstein and Jewish Majorca have done an Amazing job of gathering this information and arranging these tours to “fight ignorance and intolerance” by educating the world about the Jewish, Converso, and Chueta culture, heritage, and history in Mallorca.
