After your guide collects you from your Durban Hotel/B&B or Guest house he will take you on a educational 2.5 – 3 hours drive to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve – The oldest game reserve in Africa established in 1895. Your guide will cover points of interest like the History of Durban, KwaZulu Natal and South Africa and the different population groups as well as how the came to be in South Africa. There is special focus on our Zulu Nation the major “Black African” tribe in the area as well as the different crops we come across on route to Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game reserve. Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve: Upon entering, game viewing begins immediately and your guide will talk you through the different animal behavior you may encounter. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve has the highest population of White Rhino in the World for the area of 960 Square Kilometers. Breakfast Game Drive At your guides discretion – After enjoying a buffet breakfast, we head out for a game drive. Leaving Hilltop camp we have the opportunity to see any one of the Big 5 and a variety of Antelope, Giraffe and Zebra. We make our way towards the Umfolozi side of the reserve, where sightings of Lion, Hyena and Black Rhino are more common. The above itinerary can be changed depending on what you may or may not have seen. Optional Night Game Drive The open vehicle game drive is an option that can be taken at 5pm – 8pm at night where the guide will use a spotlight to find animals after dusk. This gives you more chance for finding the Cats as the Lion and Leopard are Nocturnal. This however does not mean that we will not see them in the day time resting in the shade or in the early morning feeding on a kill from the night before! Dinner Dinner is at the Hilltop camp restaurant, a hot and cold buffet with a variety of traditional African and international dishes.
Hluhluwe - iMfolozi Park Wilderness Area
Breakfast Game Drive A final buffet breakfast is followed by a game drive with your safari guide. This is a final chance to find what we have not or a chance to recap on what we have seen. We will then make our way out of Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve and onto the St Lucia Estuary-Isimangeliso Wetland park, for a boat cruise along the Estuary.
iSimangaliso Wetland Park
St Lucia Estuary-Isimangeliso Wetland Park Here we will have the opportunity to see, Crocodile, Hippo, Fish Eagles, King Fishers as well as Monitor Lizards. A perfect opportunity for photographers to capture the beauty of South Africa’s 1st World Heritage Site! Depart for Durban After we are finished with the Boat cruise it is time for some Lunch in St Lucia town before heading back to Durban. This is a great way to end the safari and we always feeling really satisfied and relaxed.

We spent three days with Sibo, over the safari in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Reserve and the Phezulu experience, and he made every moment unforgettable. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife and the culture, and he shared everything in such an engaging way. We felt completely safe, relaxed, and truly cared for the entire time, it was like being with a friend who wanted to make sure we enjoyed every second. On top of that, he kept us laughing constantly! His humour and kindness made the experience even more special. We cannot thank him enough for giving us such a wonderful adventure. He is a huge credit to your team and your company!

We spent our three day tour with Nicolas our guide. What a fantastic experience. Nicolas has an extensive knowledge of Africa and its wildlife and also the culture and history. We were not disappointed with the Safari. Seeing Cheetahs that had just made a kill and then to watch the vultures descend when they had finished, was a fantastic sight. Each day and evening with Nicolas came with new stories and new sightings. He made our trip to Africa a very special one and one we will never forget.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3-day tour of Hluhluwe Imfolozi animal reserve through Tim Brown Tours. Tim and his team communicated early and often so we knew what to expect. Our guide Nicholas was professional, knowledgeable, and entertaining. He picked us up in Durban and kept us smiling and laughing the whole trip until he dropped us back off for our departing flight. He didn't just teach us about the animals and the park, but South Africa as a whole. The park itself was gorgeous with many close encounters during our visit, including lions, elephants, rhinos, water buffalos, snakes, and more. The last day, we took a river cruise and saw both crocodiles and hippos. Our resort was excellent, and our standalone cottage comfortable and quiet. The meals were great and the staff very responsive to special requests. Highly recommended and a great value for any traveler.

This was an absolutely amazing adventure. We felt very safe and were very well looked after by our amazing guide Sibo. Sibo was very knowledgable and respected truly to the animals. We managed to see herds of elephants and a rhino family.

What a seamless experience! Tim arranged all transfers, accommodation and even a commercial flight to catch up with our cruise on Cunard's Queen Anne. We were picked up from our ship in Durban and after three exciting days of safari we were flown to Cape Town to rejoin our ship. Our guide was the lovely Sibo and we had a roomy Toyota van at our disposal for the entire time. The vastness of the game reserve, the interaction with the anti-poaching patrols and of course the animals themselves were our highlights. It's impossible to accurately describe having to wait for a large family of elephants to decide to cross the road right in front of our vehicle or a troop of baboons numbering maybe 50-60 meandering close-by. The hippos wallowing in the river were pretty amazing also. I'd love to post some of the pictures I took but I just can't chose which ones to post. Poor Sibo patiently answered all our questions - ranging from wild animals, village life, government policy etc. Our safari was the highlight of time in Africa and we are still talking about what a great experience it was. Highly recommended!

We highly recommend working with Tim Brown Tours for your safari experience. We were a group of 5 travelers looking for an independent multi-day safari that could be coordinated with our cruise ship schedule. Tim and his safari guide team helped us make the most of all our of time in South Africa! We left our ship in Durban, enjoyed 4 days and 3 nights total on land, and flew to Cape Town to rejoin our voyage. Tim was great with communication and helping us tweak our itinerary as our group grew and changed. We had many questions, and his expertise really showed. We were very pleased with his choice in accommodations, vehicles, meals, guides, and everything. Our main guide, Nicholas, was excellent from start to finish. He is not only an expert in spotting wildlife with great insight into the Zulu land, but he also managed our time extremely well. He checked in with each group member, gave up helpful choices and advice to maximize our wildlife safaris, and always had a delicious plan for meals! If you are passing through Durban or Richards Bay and want a stress free independent safari, whether it's for a single day or longer, give Tim a call. If you are on a cruise like our group was, consider doing a "deviation" and giving yourself more time on land without the hassle and expense of a cruise-line arranged safari.

We booked this trip and added a couple of additional open vehicle drives as well. Sheldon, our driver and guide was full of interesting information on the region and the wildlife and couldn't have been more accommodating over the 3 days, visiting Hluhluwe Imfolozi National Park as well as iSimangaliso Wetland Park. We stayed at the very pleasant Bonamanzi Game Reserve and had a chance to walk some of the tracks there in search of some of the wildlife - Sheldon even took us for an evening game drive while there also. Our open vehicle driver, Mzoe, was great fun and really knowledgeable. While sadly we didn't meet up with a leopard, we were lucky enough to get up close to the rest of the Big 5, as well as baboons, monkeys, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, vultures, various antelopes and, at the wetlands, hippos and crocs. Tim was also really helpful and proactive ahead of the trip to ensure everything went to plan - a great experience.

My wife and I had a wonderful time! Tim Brown Tours made our safari visit a unique trip for us. Cibo was a perfect tour guide, really knowing where to go to find the animals we should see. The lodging was very comfortable, as were the provided meals. Tim Brown Tours didn't cut corners for our trip!

“Tim, we can’t thank you enough for providing such an amazing trip” Tim organised a 3 day tour to fit in with our cruise schedule, picking us up from the port in Durban and returning us to Durban Airport for a flight to Cape Town to rejoin our ship. He planned a wonderful itinerary and went above and beyond to ensure we had an amazing experience. Our 3 night stay at Hilltop Camp within Hluhluwe Park was fantastic, with comfortable rooms, good food and amazing views but the highlight of course was seeing the animals. Included in our tour was a visit to the Emdoneni Wild Cat Project and a cruise through the Isimangaliso Wetlands Park at St Lucia to see the Hippos and Nile Crocodile We highly recommend Tim Brown

Tim setup a custom tour for us that fit in with the schedule of our cruise ship including flights and transfers and accommodation and activities. Tim is the ultimate professional. Nothing was too much for him. Everything was handled exceptionally well. We stayed at Hilltop inside the Hluhluwe game reserve and went on outings to see hippos in St Lucia and to a cheetah rehabilitation program. The game drives were an absolute highlight. We got to see all the Big 5 and so much more besides. Hilltop is right in the middle of the action with monkeys visiting your cabin and stealing your sugar and elephants and warthogs and cape buffalo right outside the back door of the dining room. Truly spectacular. And the food there was fantastic. This was an unforgettable trip that totally exceeded our expectations.
