Ait Ben Haddou

The site of the ksar has been fortified since the 11th century during the Almoravid period.[2][3] None of the current buildings are believed to date from before the 17th century, but they were likely built with the same construction methods and designs as had been used for centuries before.[1] The site's strategic importance was due to its location in the Ounila Valley along one of the main trans-Saharan trade routes.[1] The Tizi n'Tichka pass, which was reached via this route, was one of the few routes across the Atlas Mountains, crossing between Marrakech and the Dra'a Valley on the edge of the Sahara.[3][1] Other kasbahs and ksour were located all along this route, such as the nearby Tamdaght to the north.[2] Today, the ksar itself is only sparsely inhabited by several families.[3] The depopulation over time is a result of the valley's loss of strategic importance in the 20th century.

The height of the canyon walls can vary, but in some places can be up to 400 metres (1,312 ft) high

In places, the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 150 meters from the surrounding hamada (rocky desert) and altogether it spans an area of 28 kilometers from north to south and up to 5–7 kilometers from east to west lining the Algerian border.[1] The nearest sizable town is Erfoud, about 60 kilometers further north. One other city is Rissani, around 40 kilometers from Merzouga. Rissani was the site of a kingdom known as Sijilmassa, which became prosperous from the 8th to the 14th century due to its control of the caravan routes. Although rainfall is not very common,[2] in 2006 flooding adjacent to the dunes destroyed many buildings and killed three people.

How can you put into words the magic that is The Sahara Desert? From the camel ride at Sunset, to the Sunrise in the stillness of the sand dunes…. And all that we discovered in the towns before and after. Our driver, guardian angel and brother, Younes made it all that much more special. I highly recommend Younes as a trusted driver and friend. Ask for him if you can ☀️🙏

  • Incredible 4-day desert tour in Morocco

We just returned from an incredible 4-day desert tour in Morocco, and we can't recommend it enough! Our driver was absolutely excellent and professional. He not only ensured our safety but also took the time to ask about our interests and preferences for stops along the way. His insights into Berber culture were fascinating and added so much depth to our experience. The landscapes in southern Morocco were breathtakingly varied - every hour seemed to bring a new and stunning vista. Yes, it was hot in August, but thankfully our car was equipped with AC, and all the hotels we stayed at were comfortable. The desert camp, understandably without AC, was actually a blessing in disguise - it added to the authenticity of the experience. We wouldn't have wanted it any other way! Overall, this tour was an unforgettable adventure, and we're so grateful to have had such a knowledgeable and considerate guide. Highly recommended!

Unforgettable! Our 4-day adventure from Marrakech to Fes through the Merzouga Desert was absolutely breathtaking. From the beginning, our guide was attentive and knowledgeable about the region, sharing stories and anecdotes that enriched our experience. The desert landscape, Erg Chebbi dunes and sunset at the luxury camp in Merzouga left us breathless. The night under the stars was magical. The local food and tea were delicious, and the hospitality of our hosts was warm and genuine. The city of Fes, with its medina and the oldest university in the world, was the perfect snap for our trip. We recommend this private tour to anyone looking for an authentic and exciting experience in Morocco. Thank you to our guides and organizers for making this trip an unforgettable experience!"
