Bubbling volcano light up the night sky sulphurous mounds of yellow contort in to other worldly shapes, and mirages of camels cross lakes of salt. Laying 100m and more below sea level , the Danakil Depression is about the hottest and most inhospitable place on Planet Earth. In fact it’s so surreal that it doesn’t feel like part of planet earth at all . If you want Genuine, raw adventure few corners of the globe can Mach this overwhelming wilderness. But come prepared because with temperatures frequently saying hello to 50 Degrees and appalling roads visiting this region is more an expedition than a tour.

Ertale – Ahmed Ela (Transfer to–Lake Assal – salt caravans). The–sometimes difficult 4×4 drive–through the desert northwards to–the large, mostly dry salt lake–near Ahmed Ela is our goal of the–day . In the afternoon and–evening we can watch the–endless camel caravans coming–and going arriving empty they–are met by the ones leaving packed full with precious salt blocks. After nightfall, we can assist the procedure of assigning Walt cutters (the focolo) to the camel owners (the Arho). Ahmed Ela – DALLOL volcano-–Ahmed Ela. Explore the–fascinating volcano of DALLOL- a–volcano hidden under a kilometer-–thick deposit of salt. The volcano–marks its presence by the up–doming of the salt and hundreds–of fumaroles and hot springs in–all colors. We can visit the–remains of a ghost town, almost–entirely built in salt, at DALLOL, where miners lived in the 1930s to extract potash from the DALLOL area. The town is the hottest inhabited place on earth.

I had a wonderful experience traveling in Ethiopia. The tour company arranged everything perfectly, and our guide Gashaw, went above and beyond to make the trip memorable. His knowledge, kindness, and professionalism made all the difference. Our visit to the Afar region and the Danakil Depression was a true highlight its otherworldly landscapes, salt flats, and volcanic scenery made the journey unforgettable, and Gashaw ensured we felt safe, comfortable, and well informed the entire time. I truly appreciate their hard work and highly recommend them to anyone visiting Ethiopia.

The vendor lied and cheated me. A real scam. Never showed up on the first day of the tour to pick me up from the hotel at 6 am. Contacted the vendor through the hotel staff. Was told the tour had been rescheduled for the next day on the 24th of November. A driver picked me up from the hotel at 4:30 am, took me to the airport, charged an additional $185 cash for the airline ticket, and the tour guide never showed up to meet me at the airport so I did not board the plane. The TSA agents assisted by trying to call the vendor with no answer. I went back to the hotel. I have had to rent a room for 3 additional days. The airline ticket was to Mekele instead of Semera as outlined in the itinerary. Please do not pay this vendor. Please return my money for the tour to my original form of payment. I travel by myself and this experience was scary. My personal safety was jeopardized.

Yohannes LA An unforgettable adventure! Walk in Ethiopia organized an amazing trip to the Danakil Depression. The guides were knowledgeable, safety-focused, and friendly. The landscapes—lava lakes, salt flats, and colorful sulfur fields—were beyond anything I imagined. Walk in Ethiopia Tour and Travel transformed what could have been a daunting destination into a well-managed, enriching, and unforgettable adventure. I wholeheartedly recommend their services to anyone seeking to explore Ethiopia with confidence and authenticity. For anyone considering a journey to the Afar Danakil Depression or beyond, Walk Ethiopia Tour and Travel is the company I would strongly endorse for a safe, professional, and truly memorable experience.
