What To Expect

1

Our bike tour starts at Victorieplein (Victory Square was then called Daniël Willinkplein). On June 20, 1943, a major raid took place in Amsterdam. At the foot of the Skyscraper, large groups of Jewish citizens were arrested during a so-called Judenaktion. Assisted by Dutch police units (PBA, Police Battalion Amsterdan) and police volunteers (from the Dutch National Socialist Movement - the NSB), the Nazis transported the Jews to Olympiaplein, among other places, for registration purposes and then to the Westerbork concentration camp in the east of the Netherlands.

Merwedeplein

Merwedeplein 37-II (3rd floorby American counting) was the home of the Frank family. In the summer of 1942, Otto Frank took his family and some acquaintances to “Het Achterhuis” (the Secret Annex) on the Prinsengracht, where Otto Frank's company was located. A statue commemorates Anne Frank on Merwedeplein. Around the corner from the Waalstraat bookstore, Jimmink (still active) sold the first edition of “Het Achterhuis” (Contact publishers), the first edition of Anne Frank's diary was published in 1947. It was at this bookshop that Otto Frank bought the diary for his daughter.

This tour was informative and for a biking tour very safe. The tour guide Rudy was fantastic. He is well-read and friendly. He knew each stop’s history as he grew up in the area too. My wife and adult son got a lot out of the tour. Well done Rudy! We learned a lot.

  • Wonderful way to learn about Amsterdam during WW2

It was an amazing experience to be immersed in the extensive WW2 history of Amsterdam. Our guide Rudy was fantastic and, as a life-long resident and history professor, had many stories to share directly from his family and was a wealth of knowledge about the city in general. WW2 period photos of the exact locations we visited really brought the history to life. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that’s interested in learning about the local events during the war and beyond.

We had a great experience cycling around Amsterdam and learning about the Dutch resistance. The tour was very informative and well structured, especially loved the pictures that showed what certain locations looked like in the past compared to today. Would highly recommend if you’re interested in learning about Dutch history (outside of a museum).

Huge thank you to Rudy for the fabulous WWII history tour. Bring your bike and be ready for a journey into the past, exploring neighborhoods that are quieter and outside of the Amsterdam city center. Rudy brought to life some pivotal moments in the 1940s. He guided on a lovely tour, bringing a map and many historical archives to shape the experience. Rudy’s before and after photos helped us understand how much has changed / as well as stayed the same since those times. We were particularly moved by how many people risked their lives for the liberation of your country. I truly believe that no one else could deliver the same tour, as Rudy was born and raised in these neighborhoods. He is a fabulous story teller and navigator, who shares personal connections to the subject matter. Take this tour, and tell all your friends about it after!

  • A Wonderful Amsterdam History Experience

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our Amsterdam WWII bicycling tour which we had the good fortune of experiencing on Remembrance Day, 2024. Our guide Rudi is an excellent and extremely knowledgeable guide who did a wonderful presentation of the facts and history of each site! Our cycling tour visited sites of significance in the southwestern part of Amsterdam which is much less congested than Amsterdam Centre, while allowing us to cover a larger area with the mobility and ease of cycling. Rudi was well-prepared with vintage photos of each site taken during the Nazi Occupation. Rudi would explain the history of the site and we could completely understand the relevance and magnitude of events as we stood in the exact spot. Having been born and raised in this same area as we toured, Rudi could also tell us of his family’s experiences during the War and his life post-war while growing up there. Rudi’s tour is fascinating and was definitely one of the highlights of our Amsterdam experience. I highly recommend this cycling tour and Rudi as your guide!

Tremendous! Great! Terrific! Impressive! Outstanding! I spent 9 days in Amsterdam and this bike tour was the highlight of my trip. If you don't want to hop on and off a bus full of strangers or walk around the same old tourist traps with hundreds of people blocking your photo contact Rudy and Peter and book yourself this bike tour. There is so much history hidden in plain sight and you can only see it all by bike. Thank you guys for an amazing experience and wonderful memories.
