This tour was a first for us as we normally like to take control of our trips, however with trepidation we took the plunge and booked the tour and I must say on the whole it was great. We arrived in Helsinki three days before the tour commenced and stayed at the TAD nominated hotel Scandic Grand Marina a three star hotel, a property that we wouldn't normally book. As we arrived early we upgraded to a suite rather then the superior room that you could only book through TAD. the Hotel is old and in need of a good refurbish however it is located in a great spot where you can walk to most places of interest with plenty of restaurants and markets close by. Breakfast at the hotel was excellent with a good variety of options, we only ate at the in house restaurant once and the food was OK. We met our tour guide Jorge, as well as the 18 other guests on the eve of the tour commencing, 20 in the tour group was just right, we met others with different tour operators who had 33 or more guests and they said it was too many. Jorge, who is actually employed by Hurtigruten not TAD was amazing, he was so knowledgable and so passionate about his role that he literally made the tour a success. The tour progressed through Finland at a practicable pace, no early mornings and enough time to enjoy the amazing areas we visited. The accommodation through out was pretty good, some places the rooms were tiny, however had other redeeming features and through out Jorge was there to make sure every thing was perfect. Prior to boarding the Hurtigruten for the 5 night cruise down the coast of Norway we had arranged through Jorge to upgrade to one of the suites which we couldn't do through TAD and am so glad we did as the view down the coast is more then stunning, rather then being on deck or one of the lounge areas at times we could enjoy the view from the large bay window from the privacy of the suite. Be aware when booking the cabins through TAD the only option you have is the basic cabin and a superior cabin. Both of these options are very small with the superior looking out to the pedestrian walkway they also have small windows, the basic cabins are mostly located on the lower deck with some of them close to the docking area where cars and goods are loaded at all times of the night when the boat makes a stop, these rooms on the upper level the small windows can be totally obstructed from the life boats. The hotels in Norway were all very good. The biggest negative of booking through TAD is the fact you don't have any control over flights. They had a connection for us through Copenhagen with a one hour transfer with two different airlines which they then changed to 45mins. When we complained it wasn't enough time if flights were delayed they suggested to make sure we have travel insurance in place...I can't imagine any travel insurance would compensate you if you missed such a close connection. We opted to stay over night in Copenhagen and they charged us a few hundred dollars to change the flight. We also had the added costs of the overnight stay in Copenhagen. The other negative is you can only book a hotel room up to superior through them. Would we book another Trip a Deal tour again? Maybe.

Our group of eleven Chinese participants registered for this aurora program, which has left a deep impression on me. Despite the terrible weather that day, with rain and snow throughout the daytime, we proceeded anyway. At the hotel reception, I encountered Mayo, who patiently addressed my inquiries regarding the prospects of witnessing the northern lights that night. She displayed various weather cloud charts for different times later that evening and instilled confidence in me, stating that if we could reach a spot free from cloud obstruction, there was a possibility of observing the aurora. Her encouragement persuaded me to sign up for the tour. Though our hopes were nearly dashed by the heavy snowfall in the city that night, things took a turn for the better upon meeting our guide, Kirstin. Her enthusiasm and profound knowledge made the journey both informative and delightful. She guided us to an excellent location where we built a warm campfire. Around the fire, we shared a fabulous dinner. Right after dinner, as if by magic, the northern lights appeared just as we had wished. Kirstin was very patient, assisting us in taking photos during an amazing aurora display. Everyone was overjoyed beyond expression. Thanks to Mayo’s patience and Kirstin’s professionalism, we had an unforgettable travel experience. A heartfelt thank you to both of them!

Cozy fire and nice snacks/reindeer stew; haven't figured out how to see the pictures yet, but it was a really nice night. There was a 1:30 a.m. curfew, which showed that the company had the staff's rights in mind (and/or that they didn't want to pay overtime?), but we went all the way to the Finnish border and waited for a long time for the lights. Saw a bit of green and a baby moose on the road!

The minute David introduced himself and described his obsession of hunting auroras, we knew we had the right guide. It was no surprise that he maintained his >90% hit rate with us: we were treated to an unreal show of dancing lights that seemed to go on forever. This is someone who goes above and beyond and truly wants to share his love for chasing auroras, teaching us everything from the right apps to download and tricks and hacks on our phones and cameras. Thank you for the absolute highlight of our vacation!

My family and I came to Tromso with our main objective to chase for the Northern Lights. We were thankful that we joined the tour with an amazing tour guide Pedro. He was knowledgeable about how to search for the best location. The night started with a campfire with some hot reindeer stew, thereafter he kept looking out in the sky and guided us how to see with bare eyes and how to get the best photos. He constantly checking on us to ensure that we kept warm. The tour also included some traditional dessert, and or course hot chocolate in this chilly weather. Pedro helped us to take photos using his camera and all photos look great! We were lucky to have a clear sky during the night we went so that aurora was dancing through the sky the whole night. It was a great experience!

"Don't freak out." LOL. YES do freak out because the lights this evening were amazing. David guided us in the snowy weather to the exact spot we wanted to be (vs. driving to multiple locations or all the way to Finland) when it stopped snowing and we had finished our delicious reindeer stew. Lying in the snow on reindeer hides watching for the light show to begin was the highlight of my northern lights adventure. Highly recommend David, his enthusiasm, and creativity to cut the light pollution from other not so conscientious groups.

What a fabulous small group tour! Our guide, David, made the trip so special. He was knowledgable, knew where to go and his passion and excitement for the lights was infectious. The lights were spectacular.

What angers me is not so much the fact that I didn’t see the aurora as that other, less expensive tours found it. Instead, our guide, once on the street, started saying that because the sky was cloudy, we would be lurking in a spot looking for a hole in the clouds, very small that has never been there. They got the wrong place, but there was never any mention of trying to move, just waiting for those within 20 minutes to send updates. Personally, given the cost (190€) and not much dinner (one cookie, a couple of mashmellows, a very small portion of reindeer stew), I recommend tacking on other types of tours, perhaps bringing a packed dinner and taking the larger buses to those reduced by 15 people. I also advise you to wait until the last minute to book, if the weather is not the best you risk losing money because obviously despite a cloud cover of 85% they did not dare to cancel the experience.
