I Sassi di Matera
Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world whose territory preserves evidence of human settlements from the Palaeolithic and without interruption until today. It represents an extraordinary page written by man through the millennia of this very long history. World Heritage Site since 1993 and European Capital of Culture in 2019. With the classic and typical Ape Calessino ( tuk tuk), an Italian myth, which is very popular with families, especially with children in wheelchairs, we will cross the Old Town and the Sassi, as walking is very tiring, especially in summer, speeding through the narrow streets and alleys, making short stops for photos and videos and to visit churches in the squares and characteristic Case Grotte (House Museums).

45 minutes of “trip” in the Ape calessino to discover the most interesting points of the beautiful Matera : from the sasso Caveoso, to the sasso Barisano, from the countless churches to the old houses carved into the rock, an episode to the artisan workshop ... and, above all, a pleasant conversation with Mr. Antonio and his colleague on the history of the city of the Sassi, and on the commitment that all the people of Matera have with passion and competence to enhance a city that - thinking about what it was thirty years ago - should be called "the pride of Italy".

The tuk-tuk standard tour is a rip-off and waste of time. Other than getting bounced around, we got virtually zero explanation about Matera and was constantly rushed to a total of 3 spots to take photos.

Well worth the money. We did the tour at dusk so got to see the city highlights lit up at night. Quick hour gets all the big sites in. Toured the old cave house tour, the Matera diorama, and tour one of the churches. Recommend after long day, an hour tuk tuk of the city.

Had an amazing birdseye view of Sassi and also a cave house, plus a few other notable sights along the way. Loved being able to be in the historic spaces without having to walk to them, opportunities to step out and take pictures, and a hospitable driver/guide to “escort” us from place to place.

The driver was lovely and we had a great time getting to know the town. Would definitely recommend. The best part was the cave dwelling museum. The story of the people of Matera is interesting and sad. Their living conditions were unimaginable in today’s standards but when they were forced to move into modern housing they didn’t want to go, thinking they were losing their traditional life. There is a book called “Christ stopped at Eboli” which brought light to the living conditions here in Matera and brought attention to the historical significance of this town. Around 1950 when the towns people were relocated the old town was relatively abandoned, a playground for the young kids here, so one of the locals told us. It wasn’t until it was recognized as a world heritage site in 1993 which brought resources for its revival. And now, it’s a beautiful city to explore.

Amazing! The wine is also reasonably priced! Our guide Peter was very knowledgeable and even shared some history about wine and regions, this was our favorite tour and they were not skimpy on the wine. Each wine portion was enough to satisfy the palate and enjoy the flavor! The food was delicious and well balanced with each wine!

Very little information given. Guide spoke no English and had 3 snippets of information on a speaker. Not worth our time or money.

The only issue was finding the pick up point. The map only had an area, which when you arrived had no indication that you were at the right place. Ended up having to call the operator of the tour to find exactly where to go.
