We were dropped off at People’s Square, and it absolutely blew us away. The area was huge — easily four times the size of Chadstone in Melbourne, with stunning lights, towering buildings and multi-level shopping complexes. We wandered around for a couple of hours just soaking in the energy of central Shanghai before meeting up with Bill again for our evening food tour. We were joined by some fellow Melburnians — two sisters from Bentleigh and a guy from Carlton named Alex, which made the night feel relaxed and social right from the start. The food tour itself was an unforgettable journey through local Shanghai flavours. First stop: A dumpling shop where everything was made fresh right in front of us. We watched the dumplings being rolled and steamed, and they were juicy, soft and absolutely delicious. Second stop: A small local restaurant where we had fried rice with no eggs and fried dumplings. Simple, authentic and packed with flavour. Third stop: This was the most adventurous part of the night. We were served a spread of noodles, spiced pork, pork liver, pork intestines, pickles, and tofu with vegetables. Bill cleverly didn’t tell us what everything was until we’d already tasted it — and surprisingly, many of us ended up loving dishes we never thought we would try! Final stop – dessert: We finished with traditional warm desserts including sticky black rice pudding, a sweet hot rice drink, and another hot rice drink with tamarind mixed in. It was the perfect comforting way to wrap up the evening. After dessert, we jumped into a DiDi and headed back to our hotel, full, happy, and still talking about all the incredible food we had just experienced. If anyone is looking for a food tour in Shanghai, Bill is your man.

I had a great time. Bill has excellent English and a very understandable accent. The places he brought me to were spots I would definitely would never have found on my own. The food was completely delicious. I tried several things I would never have thought or known to try even if I had stumble upon the . He was able to share a lot about the food culture as well as Shanghai’s history. I am a woman who is traveling in Shanghai alone, and I actually ended up doing the tour alone with him because the other people who were supposed to come this evening had canceled. For any other women who are traveling alone, I felt very safe and comfortable with him even though it was just the two of us.
