While there are many hutongs to visit in Beijing, most tourists only go to a handful of them which can be overrun with other tourists. On this off the beaten path food walking tour you will visit Dong Si Area with a local guide who has intimate knowledge of the surrounding area. Included will be 20+ different food tastings at various diverse locations, such as markets, shops, bakeries and restaurants. You will visit local haunts, get a chance to meet the owners and explore historical sites that few tourists have an opportunity to experience. No chain restaurants here – we will visit mom and pop specialty food shops to try authentic items such as delicious duck necks and sesame cake. 5.00This food tour was a fantastic way to taste the local cuisine while also learning about the city and culture and I'd recommend it to anyone I know traveling to Beijing in a heartbeat! Our tour guide, Miko, was fantastic... he communicated well, made us feel like friends, and answered all our questions along the way. The food was delicious and we were definitely stuffed by the end of the tour (although the pacing of the meals and food was perfect because you take walks between stops). HIGHLIGHTS: - Our tour guide (Miko) was on time and the tour started right away after some introductions - We stopped at all local, non-touristy places and had the chance to eat dishes we probably wouldn’t have ordered ourselves like pig intestine (delicious!) - Our tour guide (Miko) demonstrated the customary way to eat each dish - Historical facts about Beijing and the local culture were shared as we passed through different areas and while we ate - Opportunities to use the restroom throughout - Accommodations were made for non-drinkers - Never felt rushed eating at any of the stops - Tour guide (Miko) was easy to talk to and took our picture at every stop (which we would have forgotten to do) I've done a lot of food tours but this was my first private one with just us and our guide instead of a group… it’s definitely a more intimate experience and gives you the chance to ask as many questions as you want. I highly recommend scheduling this food tours as soon as you arrive in Beijing so you know what food items you want to get more of when you’re in the city and you have a better understanding of the history as well.

5.00This was a great way to try local food items you wouldn’t know to try. Mike was a fun guide who had a clear plan for us. He started by giving us a preview of what we were going to eat and checked our adventure-meter to see if we were ok with the intestines (we said maybe not), so he went with his plan B which was awesome! It was a LOT of food and we didn’t completely finish anything. So def do this on a hungry stomach. We had beers whenever we wanted too. I had thought the hutong alley would be scruffier but it was a nice street. A nice walk with lots to see. Clean and safe. We visited restaurants where the menus were not in English and I would not have known what to order or what was good. He called places ahead of our arrival so our seats were ready for us and we did not have to wait more than a couple of minutes for food. It was very efficient. We had some kind of crepe sandwich which we loved! And then we had some kind of dumplings and wontons that were kind of different than we had seen before. He said it was a Michelin recommended place. So good! Then some kind of diy hot soup bowl place which was incredible. The sweet snack place had traditional items which were ok but was cool to try bc of the cultural significance. Then donkey burgers (!!) which, if we hadn’t known what it was, would have thought it was like a beef hot pocket. It was def an adventure to remember and wouldn’t have been able to do this without this guide/tour. Highly recommend!
