Djémila the Beautiful one, Latin: Cuicul or Curculum, formerly Cuicul, is a small mountain village in Algeria, near the northern coast east of Algiers, where some of the best preserved Berbero-Roman ruins in North Africa are found. It is situated in the region bordering the Constantinois and Petite Kabylie (Basse Kabylie). In 1982, Djémila became a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique adaptation of Roman architecture to a mountain environment. Significant buildings in ancient Cuicul include a theatre, two fora, temples, basilicas, arches, streets, and houses. The exceptionally well preserved ruins surround the forum of the Harsh, a large paved square with an entry marked by a majestic arch.

Roman Ruins of Djemila
As its Arabic name says "Beautiful", It is one of Algeria's best-preserved Roman sites. It is 900 m above sea level, beautifully nestled amongst a rolling hill with breathtaking green landscapes. Founded by Nerva as a Roman military garrison in the 1st century AD, but back then the name was Cuicul. Let's take a walk through this magnificent archeological site with a guide who knows the history of Algeria!

This site is some of the best Roman ruins I have visited. If you are into photography and well preserved ruins this is the tour for you. The guide and driver were super. The guide spoke great English and she is very knowledgeable about what she is presenting. The was personable and very professional. What else can someone want.

This site and Timgad (also in Algeria) are among the most extensive and best preserved Roman ruins anywhere. Both the museum’s mosaic collection and the site itself are stunning. Give yourself plenty of time - it’s worth it. We greatly benefited from the knowledge of Fancyellow’s guide, Bilel, who has worked in Constantine’s museum and clearly has a deep understanding of, and passion for, the area’s heritage. (His Latin oration in the forum was an unexpected treat. 🙂) Most amazing, we had the site almost entirely to ourselves for the day. See it now, before the rest of the world realizes what a treasure this is.

Seamless, convenient and informative Algeria tour(s) provided by Fancyellow. My guide, Imene, was personable, knowledgeable, and flexible to meet my needs. We had a busy day, combining both a visit to the ruins of Djemila and an abridged tour of Constantine, yet Imene did not once waver. She even selflessly extended our time together in order to have dinner with me, as we got stuck indoors during a thunderstorm. As for the agency itself, Omar, the main contact at Fancyellow, was as easy as can be to work with over WhatsApp. His response time was pretty much instantaneous, and he seemed eager to answer any and all of my queries, both related to the tour(s) and Algeria in general. I especially appreciated Omar’s flexibility in combining normally separate tours for Djemila and Constantine into a single day for me, as I was short on time in country. The price of $200 for this tailored tour was more than fair, and payment was more convenient than I originally anticipated — via credit card link that I was able to successfully submit (with a US credit card) prior to leaving for my trip. Finally, after some confusion on my part regarding share taxis back to Algiers from Constantine, Omar was able to arrange a private driver for me within minutes, even at such late notice — and on a Friday to boot! Again, I felt the price quoted here was more than fair given the level of service. Algeria can be a bit of challenge to navigate as an English-only speaker such as myself. Thus, I was grateful that Fancyellow was there to lessen the stress. Overall, in my opinion, their services seemed well worth the cost. If I ever have the pleasure to return to Algeria someday, I would not hesitate to reach out to Fancyellow again!

We had a great experience with our driver Haroun and guide Billel, who are both super kind and interesting people with unique passions and interests. They picked us up in Algiers and we enjoyed an excellent visit to Djemila guided by Billel, who was very knowledgable about the history and sites there, followed by a continuation to Constantine. Highly recommended!!!

The Roman ruins here are out of this world - literally. It is absolutely mind-blogging how well preserved the city remains. You could easily spend a full day, or even an entire trip marveling at this connection to the earlier times of civilization. Our tour guide, Billel, was excellent and made this visit extraordinarily interesting and fully curated to our requests. FancYellow was by far the best decision we made other than choosing to visit the magnificent country of Algeria. Highly recommended for all visitors to use FancYellow - your trip won't be the same without them!

I have travelled all over the world, & hands down this was THE BEST experience I have ever had with a tour company!!! Omar was absolutely fabulous!!! With his wicked sense of humour, vast knowledge of his home country, & having travelled a lot globally himself, the conversations were as much the highlight of the trip as were the destinations! This trip to Algeria was on my bucket list for twenty years, so to finally get there & have a perfectly tailored experience for me (a mad history junkie) & be entertained along the way, made the whole experience better than I could have wished for. I highly recommend OMAR & FANCY YELLOW TRAVEL, if you want an immersive, personal, experience. The other personnel that offered their guidance on the various places we visited, were also very knowledgable & personable, & genuinely seemed invested in offering the best perspective of their culture, & best experiences to highlight their country - which everyone in general, was very proud to share & SO welcoming. Everything was so well organised from months before I even applied for the visa, & Omar went above & beyond to assist with this, being cordial, friendly, & exhaustive responding to all my auestions. The care & attention that he applied during our emailing back & forth, was definitely a reflection of the care & attention he applied to my holiday. At all times I felt very well cared for & easily trusted I was in good hands. For the entire trip, right from the get go, I felt as though Omar was a mate I was catching up with after many years apart, & I was welcomed as such. He is someone who I could chat with, dine with, & debate with freely on many topics. This beautiful soul is a big bear of a man, who is the most gentle, kind, reassuring, & caring human who I am know very privileged to call my friend. I would not hesitate to recommend Fancy Yellow Travel to anyone wanting a genuinely excellent experience.

We had a customised 8 day private tour that was well organised by Fancy Yellow that went from Algiers to Tipaza, Cherchell, Timgad, Djemila, Constantine, Ghardaia & Mansoura desert. It was excellent with the few hitches down to delayed flights & police escorts. The guides at each place were knowledgeable and friendly and the drivers punctual and efficient. The logistics were tricky but Fancy Yellow made it easy and accomodating so we had a great holiday with no stress. The Roman ruins can be seen on my Insta ghizela_rowe
