At Caves of Laugarvatn, you walk into an actual home carved into the earth where Icelandic families lived less than 100 years ago. This isn’t a replica or a museum setup. It’s the real thing.
Our tours are small, personal, and rooted in local history. We don’t just show you the caves. We tell the stories of the people who lived there, how they raised families and built lives with nothing but nature on their side.
If you’re looking for something even more special, we offer a private tour that includes a taste of traditional Icelandic food like dried fish, smoked lamb, and Brennivín.

Caves Of Laugarvatn (the Cave People)
When you arrive at Caves of Laugarvatn, one of our guides will greet you at the service area by the parking lot. From there, we walk up to the caves, where your guide will share stories, show old photographs, and explain how people lived, worked, and raised families in these caves just a hundred years ago. You’ll get to step inside and explore the original homes built directly into the rock.

Tour with a really good narrator. Very interesting place but it must have been hard to stay there all year round. The place is not so far from the road there is an excellent gravel road down there.

With no other affordable housing the young couple made these caves their home. The new owner tells the story of the families that turned rock into home, planted food, and survived Icelandic winters. For family, for community, and for the continued endeavors of teaching people from all walks and ways about Icelandic history, these caves stand as an emblem of strength, survival, and simplicity.

Steep incline walk upto the house in the cave starts out gravel then dirt or mud depending on rain. Guide talked about 15 minutes the rest was taking pics. Not bad for price of it.
