  • Wonderful time and good food!

Had a wonderful experience with interesting insights! Samuel picked us up at our stay in Georgetown and we visited the market where we bought the ingredients for the dishes we were about to cook. Furthermore, we had a really good coffee at the market. The cooking class itself was a lot of fun. Samuel tought us everytging about the ingredients and the recipes we had chosen prior to the class. And after cooking, everything tasted delicious. After class, Samuel sent us some good recommendations for food and sights to see. Cooking with Chef Samuel is a must-see for everyone interested in food and cooking!

It was an interesting informative and interactive experience! Chef Samuel picked us up from our hotel in Georgetown and took us to the afternoon wet market where we enjoyed local Malaysian salad Parsembur (Penang’s version of Rojak) and Claypot rice before heading to the afternoon wet market to buy our ingredients! Thereafter, we proceeded to his home where the kitchen with 4 cooking stoves was strategically located once one entered his home… Chef Samuel’s aim is to enable one to feel at ease cooking in a home kitchen, as you would in your own home. Chef Samuel, a self-declared introvert, was extremely articulate about the history of the dishes, the meaning behind the dish names, and the ingredients that make the dish… we made Laksa Pahang (from his hometown), Nasi Ulam and Ondeh-Ondeh! We took turns slicing, stirring (watch that the Kerisik does not burn), and cooking! We then ate what we cooked in a cosy dining room decorated with Chef Samuel’s own wood carvings (he is self-taught!) It was a fun experience for the three of us on our first sibling trip in years! Highly recommend Cooking with Chef Samuel - to make memories and learn new and familiar dishes!!

  • Great experience in Penang!

We really enjoyed Chef Samuel’s cooking class! The communication with Sam before the day was excellent and he was kind enough to share some recommendations of local food spots for us to try. He also made it easy by picking us up from our hotel the morning of our tour. We enjoyed picking the dishes we wanted to cook (one of the benefits of a private class!) Visiting the markets with Sam was great, you could see he had long standing relationships with each stall owner and he explained the markets and produce as we moved through. The cooking class itself was well thought out and timed, and Chef Sam made sure to share lots of knowledge as we went so we took away more than just some yummy dishes. Overall a great experience in Penang- thank you Sam!

My wife and I have done numerous cooking classes across Asia. Wow what an insightful and fragrant journey to experience with Chef Samuel. A perfect introduction into Nyonya cooking and a culture lesson with it. Fro. The moment he picked us up at the hotel to us finishing our meals was an excellent learning experience. Thank you Chef.

A fantastic, must do experience. Chef Samuel picked us up early from our hotel and took us to a local food market. We shopped for our ingredients and Chef Samuel gave us great insight into the food culture in Penang. We chose to cook 4 delicious meals, Chef Samuel guided us through every step of the way and provided us with useful tips we will take home and try. He also gave us great recommendations on other local places to try which did not disappoint.

What an amazing experience. Samuel was a great teacher and was very willing to share his ’secrets’. We made satay, char siew and nasi goreng. All from first principles and we were given great instructions and how to taste the sauces and adjust on the run. Fully recommend Samuel’s classes to anyone interested in learning more about making their own dishes.

We had an amazing experience cooking with Chef Samuel! He has a great set of recipes to choose from. Started at the market to select fresh ingredients. Then headed to his immaculate and well stocked kitchen to prep and cook with his guidance. He gave us lots of advice about techniques and explained the history and significance of the food. He freely answered all of our questions and was a genuine pleasure to spend time with. Once the cooking was done we got to enjoy the fruits of our labor in his beautiful dining area. We learned so much highly recommend Chef Samuel to anyone interested in learning about Malaysian food and cooking. We look forward to taking another class from him during our next visit to Georgetown!

  • A Wonderful Vegetarian Cooking Experience for the Whole Family

Our cooking experience with Chef Samuel was one of the absolute highlights of our trip. Since we eat vegetarian, it was very important to us that our needs were considered. Samuel went above and beyond: he was incredibly attentive, flexible, and creative in adapting the menu, and the food was both delicious and inspiring. We learned so much, not only about recipes, but also about culture, ingredients, and techniques. What touched us most was how wonderfully he included our 6-year-old son in the cooking process – relaxed, patient, playful, and without any pressure. We felt truly welcomed as a family. Samuel and his family are exceptionally warm, kind, and open, which made the whole experience feel very personal and special. We can absolutely recommend this experience. It was memorable, enriching, and definitely a highlight of our journey.

This has to be the highlight of our trip to Penang. So easy with door to door travel from our hotel. Chef Samuel is delightful and super knowledgeable. He makes the experience work for everyone in the family - all cooking skill level. The food that comes out is incredible and we feel like we really earned it. Highly recommended!!

  • One of the best cooking masterclasses so far

Cooking with Samuel was an amazing experience from start to finish. Samuel first took us to the local market, where we picked up fresh ingredients — fish, vegetables, herbs, and all the essentials — which instantly made the class feel authentic and culturally immersive. Back in the kitchen, we cooked a selection of truly delicious recipes, and Samuel explained everything so clearly and properly that I’m genuinely keen to replicate the dishes at home. What I especially appreciated was that he didn’t just walk us through steps — he gave structure and context to the cuisine, so you understand why things are done a certain way, not only how. Communication before the masterclass was also excellent: polite, attentive, and timely, with a great choice of dishes available to prepare. And the best part: the food we enjoyed afterwards was absolutely amazing — the laksa, fish, and prawns were outstanding. I would highly recommend this masterclass both to people who don’t usually cook (it’s a fantastic cultural experience) and to those who already cook and want to broaden their horizon and genuinely enhance their skills with incredible recipes.
