One of Chengdu’s most popular attractions, this panda park 18km north of the city centre is the easiest way to glimpse Sichuan’s most famous residents. Don't, however, make the mistake of thinking you'll be seeing wild pandas. They are kept in large enclosures and have a dedicated team of scientists and keepers tending to their every need. As well as living, breathing pandas, there are some fascinating panda information centres and museums explaining panda conservation and husbandry.

Home to nearly 120 giant and 76 red pandas, the base focuses on getting these notoriously love-shy creatures to breed and has been remarkably successful at it. March to May is the ‘falling in love period’ (wink wink). If you visit during summer or autumn, you may see tiny newborns in the nursery incubators.

  • Winter visit - no crowds, go in the afternoon

The area is much larger than I expected. If you intend to walk it, as I prefer and did, it is a long way. You also need to use your navigational skills as the Panda Villas and attractions on the south side are not well indicated as the park's intention is for you to purchase the shuttle carts. It is not a question of the price - it is mínimal- it just makes it hard to find your own way round. I did it but almost ran out of time. Travelling in December it seems like feeding time is about 15h - when the weather has warmed up. Saw loads of Pandas feeding and playing. Also, as is low season no crowds. Fantastic visit.

Emily is a great tour guide with perfect English language skills, so it was very easy to talk with her. She has great knowledge about the Research Base and the pandas there. I really enjoyed my time with her and can only recommend this trip.

The pandas are amazing! The park is very big. It was very crowded and busy, I recommend going in the morning because the pandas are awake, in the afternoon they usually sleep
