One of Chengdu’s most popular attractions, this panda park 18km north of the city centre is the easiest way to glimpse Sichuan’s most famous residents. Don't, however, make the mistake of thinking you'll be seeing wild pandas. They are kept in large enclosures and have a dedicated team of scientists and keepers tending to their every need. As well as living, breathing pandas, there are some fascinating panda information centres and museums explaining panda conservation and husbandry.
Home to nearly 120 giant and 76 red pandas, the base focuses on getting these notoriously love-shy creatures to breed and has been remarkably successful at it. March to May is the ‘falling in love period’ (wink wink). If you visit during summer or autumn, you may see tiny newborns in the nursery incubators.

We loved visiting the Panda Research Center with Jolin. Even before the tour began, the communication was excellent. We had to chance our arrival time at least 6 times due to other activities going on with our daughter who was in China to compete in the World Games. Each time, I received a very quick reply and they adjusted our tour start time with no issues. We were greeted by a sign with our names on it, which made finding our guide much easier. The Panda Research Center is HUGE, and there are thousands of tourists. Jolin helped us see the whole park in the time that we had available, and we were very pleased with how many different panda exhibits we visited. Would highly recommend this tour. A+

Clare is a great guide, very knowledgeable and a delight to be with. She knew exactly where to look to see several pandas up close and get great pictures. It was an amazing tour.

Highly recommend this tour!! Claire was amazing - super knowledgeable about pandas and the park itself. We learned so much about the giant panda and red panda, and she knew where to go to get the best views of the pandas and avoid the crowds (the park is crowded and HUGE - we would have completely gotten lost and missed so much if we tried to navigate the park on our own!). Claire even gave us recommendations for a local restaurant for lunch after our tour, where we had the best meal!!
