Escaleras Electricas De La Comuna 13
Our Graffiti Tour in the Comuna 13 it's definitely a must do activity when you travel to Medellin. The violent past, the beautiful present and the promising future of this district makes it a magical place and an unforgettable experience. The street art throughout the whole neighborhood makes it more remarkable knowing that most of them have a special meaning related to its history. Comuna 13 is the place where the first outdoor electrical escalators in the world were installed. The escalators had a cost of 3,5 million USD and were built to save more than 350 stairs in a very steep hill. Besides the escalators that became one the biggest touristic attractions, Comuna 13 is also one of the biggest street art district in Colombia. Half of the neighborhood displays meaningful graffiti and you get the chance to learn all their meanings at this incredible tour. The history, the street art and the progress in this neighborhood are some of the reasons to visit this unforgettable place.
Sabaneta
The coffee farm experience takes place in a beautiful family farm that produces around 2 tons of coffee a year with 14.000 coffee plants. When we get there, we have a traditional delicious lunch to have energy to start learning everything about the coffee production. The coffee expert gives you a thorough context about the coffee industry to have better understanding about what you are going to see in the tour. Once the introduction is over, we invite you to plant a coffee seed and to try the bean as a fruit. Then, we take you to the plantation to pick some coffee beans from the trees and then process it step by step until is roasted and ground. You get the chance to try coffee in different brewing methods so you can differentiate the flavor notes provided by each of these devices as we explain where in the mouth you should put the coffee to taste it. In conclusion, this coffee experience is extremely complete and an unforgettable one that you should not miss out.

The day after we arrived in Medellín, the charismatic and extremely knowledgeable Erika from Medellin Day Trips picked us up at our hotel and took us on a private day tour to Comuna 13. As this is the neighborhood where she grew up in, she knows everyone and has big feelings for her community. To say that it was a very humbling experience is an understatement. It truly made us look at our own lives and the things we take for granted as well as what we stress about. From conflict to color. From fear to art. Comuna 13 is Medellín’s heartbeat of resilience. Also, you have to visit Chota 13’s store and cafe. You’ll see a lot of his work all over Comuna 13. The second part of our day trip was at the organic coffee farm Bosques de la Doctora in Sabaneta where we started off with a typical Colombian lunch wrapped up in a banana leaf. Muy delicioso! Here we learned all about growing coffee, the entire process from bean to cup, as well as the different methods of brewing my husband Bjorn got to try out himself. Bjorn was totally in his element. Unfortunately, after this tour, every other coffee shop or location serving coffee is ruined as Bjorn became a kind of novice as he got to experience first hand how a cup of freshly ground coffee should be brewed and taste like. Personally I don’t care for coffee, I’d rather have a good cup of cacao, matcha latte, chai or herbal tea. I did get to try tea made out of the dried coffee berries which tasted a bit like hibiscus. We learned so much and had the best fun with Erika. She is fluid in English as well if your Spanish isn’t up to par. When visiting Medellin, this tour is an absolute must for every tourist. Saludos, Melanie & Bjorn from Curaçao

My husband and I booked the coffee farm experience and the tour of Comuna 13 as one combined tour as we didn’t have a ton of time in Medellin. Our guide was Daniel, and he was wonderful. He spoke perfect English and was friendly, fun, informative and seemed to know lots of people in Comuna 13. We even got to meet one of the neighbourhood’s most prolific graffiti artists because Daniel introduced us. He picked us up on time at our hotel in a clean air conditioned vehicle. We headed to Comuna 13 early which was great because it wasn’t crowded and the vendors hadn’t yet set up for the day so we were able to see and enjoy the graffiti murals. We learned about the history of the community, the meaning behind the artwork and saw a ton. Daniel also took lots of great pictures of us and Airdropped them to me at the end of the tour. He also got us an incredibly delicious popsicle from a local vendor made from green mango and passionfruit which is served with a cup of lime juice and salt for dipping. We caught part of a truly impressive breakdancing performance and then we left. After that we drove over to the coffee farm which is a small family-run farm. They have some animals and they’re on the side of a mountain. They served us a delicious bandeja paisa for lunch with some of the ingredients coming straight for their farm (avocado, eggs, the leaves it was wrapped in). We brewed their coffee in 4 different methods and got to compare them. We also learned a lot about the coffee industry, and the life cycle of the coffee plant. Then we geared up in rubber boots and traditional coffee harvesting gear and set off into the hills to pick some coffee berries ourselves and then go through all the steps of the process. I would highly recommend Medellin Day Trips and Daniel specifically. He made the day really great.

We were very fortunate to have met our guide, Sara. Her passion and energy was key to our memorable experience. We gained a much deeper understanding and appreciation for Medellín and Columbia through Sara. Her acknowledgment of their difficult past was very helpful in getting the full picture about this country. Highly recommend Sara and this combined tour!

We loved our tours of Comuna 13 and the coffee farm. Sara, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable, personable, and made the experience great. I would recommend this tour as a must do when in the Medellín area. Comuna 13 offers fascinating history and views & a lively atmosphere (Sara was wonderful at letting us explore wherever we wanted) while the coffee farm offers a more rural experience that is equally interesting, as you learn the process of coffee and even get to dress in farmer’s clothes. This is a great company and if I return to Colombia, I will book every tour with them that I can! They made us feel so safe and lucky to have a private tour at a reasonable cost!!
