The most eastern surviving Christian monastery in the Wadi el-Natrun of Egypt is Dier Al Anba Bishoy (Pshoi, Bishoi), which was founded by St. Bishoy (Pshoi). Though similar, the story of Saint Bishoy is sometimes told with varying details. However, in general, we believe that Saint Bishoy was born in the Egyptian Nile Delta in 320 AD. Apparently, his parents were deeply religious, and it is said that in a dream one night, an angel of the Lord asked for the services of one of his mother's children. St. Bishoy's mother gave the angel his selection of her children, and the angel chose Bishoy.A frail child, his mother thought that the angel might do better, but the angel said that, "the Lord's power in frailty is perfect". At the age of twenty, Bishoy joined the Monastery of Seetis. He was particularly fond of the book of Jeremiah from the Old Testament, and was therefore called Abbot Bishoy the Jeremian.
This Monastery is very probably the first monastery established in Wadi El-Natrun . The modern name of the monastery, al-Baramus, is Arabic and is derived from the Coptic christian Pa-Rameos, which means "that of the Romans" in the honor of Maximus and Domidus , two sons of the Roman Emperor Valentinus who died from excessive fasting. Their bodies were buried in a crypt below the Church of the Virgin .

Naelah was a wonderful guide. Professional, warm, informative with good English and interesting information about the monasteries. We also enjoyed being shown around by the monks. We felt very safe with our driver but will probably never enjoy Egyptian style driving

Our guide Naeleh was as wealth of information on the monasteries and area, was easy to understand and friendly. We also had a good driver who was familiar with the roads and Egyptian driving practices. The tour company was also very responsive on communications and the tour was as advertised. I would say this tour is for someone that wants to dive deeper into Egypt and is more of an intrepid traveler. It is not for someone that isn’t up for a bit of an adventure. We found the monastery grounds to be very relaxing, with interesting architecture and historic significance. Monks guided us at two of the monasteries and Naeleh at the third.

Naelah was an amazing guide: we totally loved the Natron Valley Monasteries tour. It showed us a different side of Egypt. The monks were very helpful, guiding us through the Monastery themselves. The local visitors were very welcoming and the kids followed us around wanting photos with us. The building and view was exceptional. The added police escort between the monasteries was not needed but ensured we were very safe. Naelah provided information on the areas we were driving through to the Natron Valley and lots of history. She was very welcoming na shad perfect English, we really enjoyed our day with her. This trip was one of our favourites during our tour of Egypt, it would be very easy to miss but I highly recommend it:

I very much enjoyed my tour with Egyptologist tour guide Naelah because she was super knowledgeable and she even arranged for us to meet with her friend Coptic monk Timon there at one of the monasteries, who tested her knowledge in front of me to ensure I get accurate information and also added interesting knowledge facts to the programme. Naelah orchestrated best time management to ensure that I made it to my next programme plan on time. Best Sunday tour option is to go for this monasteries tour with Naelah.

Fantastic experience from start to finish! We had a wonderful day tour of the monasteries with Medhat. He showed us everything and gave us all of the history. It was really a magical time. Medhat knew some of the monks too and we were even able to speak with them and ask questions. That was amazing! The old monasteries are beautiful with spectacular frescos. The driving was all safe and Medhat took great care of us. We are very thankful for our tour. Highly recommended!
