The 2nd Tunnel
The 2nd Tunnel, which was made by North Koreans to invade South Korea, was discovered on March 24, 1975. This tunnel is 3.5 kilometers long and sits 50~160 meters below the surface. It stretches out 1.1 kilometers and 2.4 kilometers in the south and north directions respectively. Only 500 meters is open for tourism among the whole length. Inside of the tunnel, there is a plaza to gather a large military force. The tunnel is divided into 3 exits. The use of this tunnel would allow for thirty thousand armed forces as well as tanks to pass through per hour. For now, the tunnel is operated as part of Cheorwon Security Tourism Course and many tourists visit this area every year.

This was a truly unique experience and I’m glad I was able to get to do something outside of the traditional tourist 3rd tunnel. It ended up being a private tour and my guide, Leo, still delivered. Leo was very knowledgeable about the DMZ and the Korean War and was patient when I had any questions. The highlight for me were the views of the waterfall — absolutely incredible. None of the locations we went to were particularly busy or crowded, which I appreciated. It was definitely more local than tourist and I would recommend it to anyone who is considering!

By participating in this tour, I learned a lot about the history of Korea, the present and future wishes, which I had never known before. The experience I had with my own eyes, feet, and directly with my own hands was something I could not obtain from information from social media or the media. Best of all, the tour guide Park's explanation was easy to understand, accurate and attentive, and he always cared about us, which made me much more comfortable and truly enjoyable. I could feel his trustworthiness in everything he did. And lunch was the most delicious rice on this trip to Seoul. Mr. Yu's driving is safe and secure, both on the way and back. It was a very satisfying day to meet a tour that was fulfilling and satisfying in everything. I hope to join Park's tour again next time!
