Part 1: The History & The Tongue We begin with a visual journey into the origins of Irish writing, from Ogham, to Insular script, working our way up to Cló Gaelach. You’ll see how this script evolved over 100s of years, examining beautiful prints, including the Irish Constitution, learn about what happened to Cló Gaelach and recent re-engagement with it. We’ll also learn about our very own English, Hiberno-English shaped by the Irish language and be taught a few essential Irish phrases to use during your stay. Part 2: The Art of the Pen Using specially designed practice sheets, you will be guided through each stroke of the Cló Gaelach script - creating a fun way to engage with this script while examining real printed examples of Cló Gaelach from the 20th century. Part 3: The Masterpiece Once you’ve found your flow, you will write a poem in Irish chosen from a 100-year-old Irish poetry book from a local female Dublin poet. After our time together, you’ll receive a curated digital resource pack. Good to Know: Venues rotate between Priory Market, the LAB, and Segotia - you'll receive your exact location by text and email well in advance, with clear "how to find us" instructions.

We went into this experience not knowing a ton about Irish literature and writing, and at first I felt out of my depth, but our guide Sophie was so passionate about the topic that I was engaged listening to her the whole session. She took us on a short tour around Tallaght then held the workshop in Priory Market which made the evening feel more immersive. Speaking for myself, after the workshop I had a much better grasp (or at least the beginnings of it) of Irish writing, Cló Gaelach, and how history has shaped this beautiful script. Thank you Sophie for a great first evening in Dublin and teaching us!

we loved this activity. We learned a lot about Irish culture, language and history. Sophie was both exciting and passionate. Being French, we particularly appreciated the time she took to explain everything clearly and show us many examples. The activity was very enriching and accessible, even for beginners (it is necessary to understand English of course). I highly recommend this activity. In addition, she provided us with references to deepen this beautiful introduction to the Irish language.

Learning about the history of the Irish language was amazing! The teacher is super passionate, and what you learn in this workshop is vital information that anyone living in Ireland needs to know. Really made me appreciate this language and look at it with new eyes.

My friends and I had an amazing time trying to write in Cló Gaelach. I may have been too focused though! Very informative session but also equally as interactive. Highly recommend!
