What To Expect
Geyser del Tatio
El Tatio (from the Kunza “tata-iu”) which means “the grandfather who cries”, is one of the highest Geyser fields in the world. Located in the Cordillera de los Andes to the NE of San Pedro de Atacama, it is the largest group of geysers in the southern hemisphere. and the third largest in the world, after Yellowstone (USA) and Dolina Giezerow (Russia). The maximum expression of these fumaroles begins between 06:00 and 07:00 hrs. Approx. With temperatures reaching 85 C. On our return it is possible to observe fauna such as vicuñas, llamas, rheas, vizcachas, etc. Meanwhile in the Flora stand out the giant Cactus, llaretas, coirón, etc. We will observe from a viewpoint, the small town of Machuca, its few inhabitants are mainly dedicated to grazing and cheese production, very close to from the place is the Laguna Salada where families of flamingos, ducks and seagulls live with an imposing landscape of beauty.

5.00This is a great trip - I highly recommend it. Manuel was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable. Breakfast came after the geysers visit about 4 hrs after pick up so I recommend bringing a little snack :) It really is as cold as they say on El Tatio (it was minus 6 Celcius in January) but it gets warmer as the sun comes up and you descend a bit to the the other destinations on the tour. They will pick you up from your accommodation but say they will drop you back in town, so if you are staying a little bit out of town talk with them beforehand about being dropped back at your accommodation.

5.00An excellent expedition. A very early start but worth it as Alex, the tour guide, made sure we reached the destination first. He gave a really good background on the history and geology while making sure we got full pleasure from the trip. Spotting wildlife on the way back to San Pedro was an added bonus.
