The Georgetown 7 Curry Tour is an immersive culinary experience that exposes guests to the entire process of preparing the traditional Guyanese dish 7 Curry, from buying key ingredients such as eggplant, edoe and catahar at a local vegetable market to learning the steps of preparing the dish with chef Eon John. Eon is known locally as “The Singing Chef” because he serenades his guests with Guyanese folkloric songs as they cook and eat with him. 7 Curry is a traditional dish loved by the Guyanese people that is usually cooked on special occasions such as weddings and family gatherings. The meal is beautifully served on freshly gathered waterlily leaves. This is a much loved traditional meal but prepared but with a modern twist. And the fun part is you get to eat it with your hands!

The Seven Curries tour with the Singing Chef was absolutely phenomenal and genuinely one of the best experiences I had in Guyana. What I loved most was that it did not feel like a typical tour at all. It felt so thoughtful, so personal, and full of the kinds of places and moments that you just would not get to experience on your own. I especially loved all of the behind the scenes locations we were taken to, especially the dhal puri shop. That stop was such a standout for me. The owner was wonderful, the atmosphere was amazing, and it really felt like such a special experience to be brought there. The market was also incredible and gave such a great sense of the ingredients, the energy, and the everyday rhythm behind the food. What I also really appreciated was the historical side of the tour. Visiting the Indian Arrival Monument and learning more about the history of indentureship in Guyana was incredibly meaningful to me, especially because it connects so closely to my own heritage in Fiji. I really felt like I came away having learned more about my own history too, which made the experience even more special. The cooking itself was amazing. I loved that it really brought everything back to the basics, starting with whole vegetables, roots, and fresh ingredients and building the flavors from there. Grinding turmeric and seeing everything come together from scratch gave me such a deeper appreciation for the food. It did not feel performative or simplified. It felt like being shown the real foundations of the cuisine. And on top of all of that, they were just the most hospitable couple. Their backyard is absolutely beautiful and honestly feels like something out of Bridge to Terabithia. Their whole home and environment felt so warm and welcoming. The food was phenomenal, the music afterward was such a fun touch, the rum was great, and the whole experience just felt so full and joyful from beginning to end. If I am ever back in Guyana, I would absolutely do this again. I cannot recommend it enough.

The Seven Curries tour was such a fun adventure with Eon and Jess! My wife and I had had dinner with them the previous night, and it had already felt like we were just going round to a friend's house for dinner. This tour was just like that as well; we had come to Guyana for the weekend, and we really felt like Eon and Jess were looking after us and showing us round over the weekend. The day started with Eon and Jess picking us up from our hotel. To start with, we drove through Georgetown and saw some historic spots (which as a history nut I really enjoyed), and visited the Indian Arrival Monument Garden, which was a chance to learn some of the stories of those who came to Guyana. We stopped by a local supermarket to buy some ingredients for the Seven Curry we would cook later, and I was completely blown away by the array of wonderful spices available. We also stopped off at a couple of local markets to get some local fruits and vegetables to cook with; I even got to try a few things! We also stopped at a lovely roti spot for some lunch, and picked some giant lily leaves to use as our bowls for our meal later. After our adventure round Georgetown, we went back to the Secret Garden (where we had been the previous evening); The Secret Garden, where the Singing Chef does his cooking and entertaining, is a cozy hideaway, and the afternoon rain made it feel even cozier. Then, we were all hands-on in the cooking process. The Seven Curry is almost a national dish for Guyana, something which has a real story and culture behind it, as it has been shaped by those who brought the traditions to Guyana. Eon showed us how to make curry from scratch using some of the spices we'd picked up; I don't think I'm going to be able to make curry any other way from now on. I loved cooking and trying all the different elements to the curries we made; I wish I could have eaten all of it. And then, or course, it wouldn't be The Singing Chef without some music. We're so glad we got to spend so much time with Eon and Jess; they are the sort of people who seem to know everyone in Guyana, and are always on hand to help people. I hope I can make it back to Guyana again soon, because there's so much of the country to explore! I'll definitely be spending more time with Jess and Eon when I do.

Such a phenomenal experience. My mum and I were visiting Guyana, where my granny was from. This was my first time here, and this tour was the perfect way to introduce us to the country. I enjoyed every moment of the tour. Eon and Jessica are absolutely wonderful. They keep you engaged, are so kind and friendly and you can feel their love for Guyana, food, art, culture and people in everything they do. They are both so knowledgeable and the experience is must when visiting Georgetown. I would highly recommend this tour and have done to all my family. Truly something special.

I'm trying to write this review while it's still fresh in my mind. I only booked three days in Guyana, however after this tour I wish I had planned a longer trip. Spending the day with Eon (the singing chef) made me want to get to know Guyana more. Jess (his partner) was equally lovely and a joy to talk with. I learned a lot about the history of Guyana and visited places in the city I would not normally have found otherwise. The food was delicious. Absolutely delicious. It felt healthy and fresh and flavorful. Eon and Jess have created a little sanctuary in their backyard which was like a little peaceful oasis. We visited the manatees at the end of the day which was awesome. I don't think that's normally a part of the tour, but it was a perfect way to end the day. It put a smile on my face. Would recommend this day to anyone visiting Georgetown. 10/10, A+, 5 stars, excellent.

What an amazing experience with Jessica and Ian in this tour of historic Guyana that met up to the role of 7 curries. We toured several local markets, and learned how to make several local dishes with this accomplished chef. They sent us pictures of our culinary feats and Jessica presented a condensed lesson on the benefits of several herbs and Joe to include them In daily meals. The singing chef serenaded us with original songs about Guyana Jessica and Ian shared their passion for Guyana, the people, the food, and the culture in an insightful, fun day

This was an incredible experience. Ron and Jessica taught us so much about the history of Guyana and how it helped shape our families, like so many others. We were nervous about shopping in the market with our young child and i was completely wrong. They use a specialized market where they know everyone, which made it such a great personalized and safe experience for our family. We love cooking, and getting to cook with a world class chef was such a treat. The food was so good at one point I noticed I was crying from joy. Eon and Jessica treated us like family, made us feel welcome and loved, then shared one of the best meals I’ve ever had with us. Completely moving and life changing experience.

The 7 curry tour with the singing chef was amazing. We saw a lot of Georgetown with Jessica sharing loads of really interesting info. Picking our own lotus leaf plates was fun!! Tonys puris stuffed with dhal were amazing. Eon (the singing chef) was clearly an expert in his field and was generous to share his tips and techniques. We helped chop and prepare the curries including making the masala paste - I’m going to get the husband to make that at home!! Overall a must do entertaining and informative experience. Eon and Jess made us feel so welcome and even sent through the recipes afterwards.

This tour was absolutely amazing. The guides were very knowledgeable and have done extensive research into the history and that is something that you learn during the tour. The tour includes history, sites, selection of vegetables, food prep, preparation, songs and much, much more. I hope I am able to come back to Guyana just to experience another tour with Singing Chef Adventures.

My partner and I have taken cooking classes/tours in three countries: South Africa, Sri Lanka, and this in Guyana. This was far and away the BEST in all aspects - the taste of the food, uniqueness of experiences beyond the cooking, and the interactions with the hosts. I especially loved how the tour told the story of Guyana's people - from their history as slaves and indentured workers, to the country's independence and present-day - through a culinary lens. Connecting history and food culture is a personal passion of mine, and I felt the hosts uniquely shared this passion with me. The hosts, Eon and Jessica, could not be a more warm and interesting pair. My partner and I were the only ones on the tour, so it was a really intimate experience and we got to know them well. They have extremely interesting backgrounds, having both lived all over the world, then chose Guyana as their home. They are passionate about the food, music, and culture of Guyana, and about creating opportunities for local people and indigenous communities. Seeing and feeling their dedication to their country and community is inspiring, and really made us feel like our trip was meaningful. The tour itself took us to numerous stops throughout Georgetown: Indian immigration monument, Bourda market, juice vendor, coconut water vendor, Tony's Puri Shop, lotus leaf harvesting, and finally Eon and Jessica's home where we prepared lunch. This gave us a glimpse of everyday life in Georgetown, and also gave a sense of what a tight-knit "small town"-like feel Georgetown has. Tony's Puri Shop was a highlight - exceptionally good dhal puri filled with potato-soya curry that was arguably the most delicious thing I've ever tasted. The cooking itself was fun and easy. Eon and Jessica have streamlined the process so that guests learn the key steps and ingredients, without being overwhelmed or distracted by prep that'll take all day. Their backyard is set up with a kitchen, dining/prep tables, and stage under two covered areas that provide shade (or rain protection on such days). They have several fans to keep the area comfortable even in Guyana's humid environment. After we ate, Eon performed a few songs with his guitar, which was a really nice endcap to the day. Logistics: We booked online via TripAdvisor, and we exchanged confirmation messages with Jessica here. (By comparison, I tried to also arrange a visit to Backyard Cafe, but could never get them to answer any WhatsApp messages.) Eon and Jessica picked us up at our hotel via taxi in the morning around 9 am. The taxi took us around town. They ordered us a taxi back to our hotel at the end of the tour, probably a bit after 2 pm. Eon and Jessica provided some photos and all recipes to us afterwards. We enthusiastically recommend this tour to anyone visiting Guyana. The personal touch makes this incredibly worthwhile.
